Entrecroisant ces trois disciplines, l'ouvrage, publié à l'occasion de l'exposition «Leiris & Co.», présentée au Centre Pompidou-Metz, retrace la vie et l'œuvre de Michel Leiris (1901-1990). Écrivain, poète, ethnologue, ami des grands artistes de son temps : Masson, Picasso, Miro, Giacometti, Lam, Bacon, Michel Leiris se situe à la périphérie des grands courants du siècle et annonce de façon visionnaire les enjeux contemporains issus de la mondialisation et des études postcoloniales. Plus qu'un portrait de l'homme aux multiples facettes, il s'agit ici d'une autre lecture de la modernité qui va de Raymond Roussel à Picasso, en passant par l'Afrique (la mission Dakar-Djibouti en 1931), le jazz, la tauromachie, l'opéra. En marge du surréalisme, il rencontre Max Jacob, puis Georges Bataille, avec lequel il partage non seulement l'aventure de la revue Documents, mais aussi l'intérêt pour le sacré, l'érotisme et la mort. Pendant la guerre il se lie avec Jean-Paul Sartre, puis avec Aimé Césaire, qui lui fait découvrir le syncrétisme des Antilles. Son engagement révolutionnaire va le conduire également en Chine et à Cuba. Son œuvre littéraire (L'Âge d'homme, L'Afrique fantôme, La Règle du jeu) est une vaste quête autobiographique, dans laquelle il souhaite «introduire ne fût-ce que l'ombre d'une corne de taureau». Conçu comme un journal, le livre déroule année par année une chronologie de Michel Leiris, dialoguant avec une cinquantaine d'essais de nombreux auteurs. Largement illustré d'œuvres, de documents, et de manuscrits, il constitue l'ouvrage le plus complet sur le parcours de cet écrivain singulier dont l'œuvre a une résonance particulière sur l'art de notre temps.

"The advent of the Kodak camera in 1888 made photography accessible to amateurs as well as to professionals. Artists were not immune to its allure, and many began experimenting with the camera as a means of capturing images as studies for final works and of observing the world and the people in it. Snapshot investigates seven Post-Impressionist painters and printmakers: Pierre Bonnard, George Hendrik Breitner, Maurice Denis, Henri Evenepoel, Henri Rivière, Félix Vallotton, and Edouard Vuillard. Although celebrated for their works on canvas and paper, these artists also made many personal and informal snapshots. Depicting interiors, city streets, nudes, and portraits, these photographs were kept private and never exhibited. As a result, most have never been published. Juxtaposing personal photographs with the related paintings and prints by these Post-Impressionist artists, Snapshot offers a new perspective on early photography and on the synthesis of painting and photography at the end of the 19th century"--
