"The beeldenstorm, or the Iconoclastic Fury, that raged throughout the Low Countries in 1566 is a key concept in the history of the Netherlands. This 'popular uprising', which was partially grafted on Protestant ideas and characterized by its iconclasm, has traditionally and unquestioningly been considered a turning point in the history of the Low Countries. It is all the more striking, therefore, that this uprising has never received the attention it deserves in art history and that with very few exceptions there has been little to no interest in the development of painting just after the beeldenstorm and before the advent of the great Baroque masters. Featuring previously unpublished materials, Antwerp Art after Iconoclasm investigates how the esteemed painters of the period - including Adriaen Thomasz Key (1544-1599), Maarten de Vos (1532-1603), Frans Pourbus the Elder (1545-1581), and Michiel Coxcie (1499-1592) - sought a new visual idiom. This study explains why this period of Netherlandish history should be considered an important turning point in the broader context of art history."--Back cover.

Richard Verstegan is the usual English name of a man who went through early life as Richard Rowlands, before reverting to his ancestral Dutch surname in exile. Born in Mid-Tudor London around 1550 and dying in the Baroque Antwerp of 1640, his ninety-odd years of life saw numerous religious, political and military conflicts, in some of which he was a minor player and on almost all of which he commented in his writings. After studying at Oxford without taking a degree, training as a goldsmith and illegally printing a Catholic book, he fled to France, where he worked as a propagandist for the faction of the Duke of Guise. Imprisoned in France for these activities, he fled to Rome, and eventually settled in Antwerp, where he worked for almost fifty years as, variously, a newswriter, engraver, publisher, editor, translator, polemicist, antiquarian, cloth merchant, poet and satirist. He is one of the earliest identifiable European newspaper journalists, having worked on Abraham Verhoeven's Nieuwe Tijdinghen (Antwerp, 1620-1629).

Peasant festival imagery began in sixteenth-century Nuremberg, when the city played host to a series of religious and secular festivals. The peasant festival images were first produced as woodcut prints in the decade between 1524 and 1535 by Sebald Beham. Stewart takes a fresh look at these images and explores them within their historical and cultural contexts, including the introduction of the Lutheran Reformation into the towns institutions and the accompanying re-evaluation of the towns popular festivals.
