Son histoire en Occident est complexe. La question du noir dans la sphère de l'art se pose en des termes symboliques, mais aussi ''physiques'' quand le peintre s'emploie à utiliser le contraste des ombres et des lumières. Le noir sera aussi au centre de l'exploration des confins de la peinture par les suprématistes et les constructivistes. De nos jours, depuis la banalisation de la couleur, il s'est créé une esthétique du noir et blanc dans la photographie, le cinéma, comme dans la mode vestimentaire ou la publicité. Au total, cet ouvrage propose une histoire culturelle et anthropologique du noir, à ce jour inédite.''
