The Museum of Modern Art announces 'Marcel Broodthaers: A Retrospective', the artist's first museum retrospective in New York. Bringing together some 200 works in multiple mediums, the exhibition explores the artist's critical if under-recognized place in the history of 20th-century art. Marcel Broodthaers is organized by MoMA and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS) in Madrid, in close consultation with the artist's Estate in Brussels. It is organized by Christophe Cherix, The Robert Lehman Chief Curator of Drawings and Prints at MoMA, and Manuel Borja-Villel, Director of MNCARS, with Francesca Wilmott, Curatorial Assistant, MoMA. The exhibition will travel to MNCARS in October 2016 and the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen (KNW), Düsseldorf, in early 2017. Marcel Broodthaers's (Belgian, 1924–1976) extraordinary output across mediums placed him at the center of international activity during the transformative decades of the 1960s and 1970s. Setting a precedent for what we call installation art today, his work has had a profound influence on a broad range of contemporary artists, and he remains vitally relevant to cultural discourse at large. Throughout his career, from early objects variously made of mussels, eggshells, and books of his own poetry; to his most ambitious project, the 'Musée d'Art Moderne. Département des Aigles'; and the retrospective 'Décors', made at the end of his life, Broodthaers occupied a unique position, often operating as both innovator and commentator. The exhibition will consider the artist with these lasting contributions in mind.

Celebrating Marcel Duchamp's revolutionary contributions to modern art, this innovative exploration of the Stuttgart Duchamp Collection and the Archive of Serge Stauffer offers new insights into both artists' philosophies. As the inventor of the Readymade and a founder of conceptual art, Marcel Duchamp's work is still provoking important discussions about what defines art. Accompanying the first exhibition of the important Stuttgart Duchamp Collection, this book also presents the work of the Swiss artist and educator Serge Stauffer and his renowned research on Duchamp's art and writings. The series of 100 questions Stauffer wrote to the French artist in 1960 - and Duchamp's answers - provide important insights into Duchamp's intellectual and creative practice and bear witness to the depth of Stauffer's exceptional research. This book opens with an introduction to the relationship between Duchamp and Stauffer. It features brilliant reproductions of Duchamp's most renowned works, including Bottlerack, the painting study for Chocolate Grinder, No 2, and the window object La Bagarre d'Austerlitz. A biographical essay on both Duchamp and Stauffer provides important background to understanding the exceptional relationship between both artists.

Live or Die: Philippe Vandenberg - Bruce Nauman is the catalogue to the exhibition of the same name held in Gallery Sofie Van De Velde, Antwerp, in 2017. The catalog includes a selection of works by Philippe Vandenberg and American artist Bruce Nauman. At first, it may seem startling to see Nauman's small but dense selection of works alongside those by Vandenberg. And yet there's something that links the oeuvre of these apparently divergent artists. With essays by Prof. Dr. Anna Dezeuze (École Supérieure d'Art et de Design Marseille-Méditerranée), Dr. Brigitte Kölle (Hamburger Kunsthalle), and Prof. Dr. John C. Welchman (University of California, San Diego).

Dali/Duchamp examines in detail the often-overlooked relationship between two of the twentieth century's most famous artists. Though polar opposites at first glance, Duchamp, the father of conceptual art who rejected painting in 1918; and the more showman-like Dali, the exceptional painter of fantastical landscapes; were united by a combination of humour and scepticism that led both to challenge conventional views of art and life. After meeting in the 1930s through mutual contacts within the Surrealist group, they maintained a firm friendship over the following decades, spending time together in Paris, New York and Catalonia, where Duchamp purchased a summer house in Cadaques, close to Dali's home in Port Lligat. Throughout the book, expert contributors explore themes common to both artists, chief among them eroticism and identity, and both men's surprising engagement with science, optics, religion and myth. Each section is sumptuously illustrated with key pieces from both artists' bodies of work, and features previously unpublished photographs, letters and ephemera that demonstrate the enduring warmth of their friendship.

This publication is the first major monograph on the work of the Belgian artist Fabrice Samyn (born 1981). It is organised in various sets of analogies (form, sign, theme), and gives the measure of a work structured as a tree around the question of identity. It thrives in a space which includes diversities and dualities. In it we mainly discover the dualities between icon and idol, light and shade, presence and duration, male and female, author and impostor. Although Samyn's oeuvre developed at the same time as the internet and follows a similar organic growth, it gives full credit to skill and materiality. The artist either seeks close collaboration with craftsman or rises to the challenge of mastering the various media that he uses himself, be it painting, sculpture, poetry and more recently choreography. This copiously illustrated volume contains essays by Vinciane Despret, philosopher of sciences and professor at the University of Liege; Pascal Rousseau, professor of Contemporary Art History at Paris 1, and art historian Wivine de Traux.
