De allereerste expressionistische beweging van Nederland ontstond omstreeks 1914 toen een groep jonge kunstenaars geïnspireerd raakte door de internationale avant-garde die steeds vaker te zien was in Nederland. Ook het werk van Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne en Henri Le Fauconnier werd in ons land getoond op spraakmakende tentoonstellingen. Tegelijkertijd ontdekten kunstenaars het pittoreske Noord-Hollandse dorp Bergen, waar zij zich vanaf 1910 vestigden en een gemeenschappelijke expressionistische stijl ontwikkelden. Landschappen, stillevens en portretten werden met brede penseelstreken op het doek gezet, in verzadigde kleuren met sterke contrasten. Het belang van Van Gogh, Cézanne en Le Fauconnier voor het ontstaan van de Bergense School werd al vroeg opgemerkt. Hoe deze beïnvloeding precies plaatsvond is echter nooit onderzocht. In dit rijk geïllustreerde boek wordt ingegaan op deze receptiegeschiedenis en de wijze waarop de schilders van de Bergense School hun inspiratiebronnen verwerkten tot een eigen stijl. Daarmee wordt een nieuw hoofdstuk geschreven van de Nederlandse kunstgeschiedenis.
