A la fin du Moyen Age, au début de la Renaissance, un système mental succède à un autre. Le monde cesse d'être pensé de façon théorique. Il est examiné et commence à être compris par l'observation. Les peintres jouent un rôle fondamental dans cette mutation. A partir du XIVe siècle, Giotto, Ambrogio Lorenzetti, puis les Limbourg, Jan Van Eyck, enfin Dürer et Léonard de Vinci, se donnent pour objet d'imiter les choses qui les entourent. Ils n'évoquent plus l'Eau, l'Air, la Terre ou le Feu - éléments abstraits - mais ils distinguent la vague, le torrent, la goutte, le lac; ils représentent les nuages, si divers, et les vents, rapides ou tranquilles; ils montrent les boues, les rochers, la flamme dans la cheminée ou l'incendie qui ravage les maisons. Les œuvres que ces artistes peignent favorisent une prise de conscience: celle de la beauté du monde mais aussi de sa fragilité. Le sentiment de la nature naît peut-être à ce moment, de cette crise visuelle qui est une crise européenne. L'objet de ce livre est d'explorer les origines du genre du paysage; il est aussi, et plus profondément, de chercher les racines de notre monde moderne, que hantent les questions d'environnement et la peur d'un changement où sombrait la nature.

It is rather a book about materials, musical materials and their relation to other artistic materials. It is not a book for professionals or specialists but for those who like to explore the capacities and possibilities of artistic materials. However, it never talks about them in a technical way. This book is instead about love and desire for old repertoires, and especially for polyphony, attempting to retrace its shape: the initial desire that makes one want to perform this music.

But beneath the quest for order lies the uneasy dread of fundamental disorder. True chaos is hard to imagine and even harder to represent. In this book, Martin Meisel considers the long effort to conjure, depict, and rationalize extreme disorder, with all the passion, excitement, and compromises the act provokes.Meisel builds a rough history from major social, psychological, and cosmological turning points in the imagining of chaos. He uses examples from literature, philosophy, painting, graphic art, science, linguistics, music, and film, particularly exploring the remarkable shift in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries from conceiving of chaos as disruptive to celebrating its liberating and energizing potential. Discussions of Sophocles, Plato, Lucretius, Calderon, Milton, Haydn, Blake, Faraday, Chekhov, Faulkner, Wells, and Beckett, among others, are matched with incisive readings of art by Brueghel, Rubens, Goya, Turner, Dix, Dada, and the futurists. Meisel addresses the revolution in mapping energy and entropy and the manifold effect of thermodynamics. He then uses this chaotic frame to elaborate on purpose, mortality, meaning, and mind.
