"Gordon Matta-Clark (1943-1978) has never been an easy artist to categorize or to explain. Although trained as an architect, he has been described as a sculptor, a photographer, an organizer of performances, and a writer of manifestos, but he is best known for un-building abandoned structures. In the brief span of his career, from 1968 to his early death in 1978, he created an oeuvre that has made him an enduring cult figure. In 2002, when Gordon Matta-Clark's widow, Jane Crawford, put his archive on deposit at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal, it revealed a new voice in the ongoing discussion of artist/architect Matta-Clark's work: his own. Gwendolyn Owens and Philip Ursprung's careful selection and ordering of letters, interviews, statements, and the now-famous art cards from the CCA as well as other sources deepens our understanding of one of the most original thinkers of his generation. Gordon Matta-Clark: An Archival Sourcebook creates a multidimensional portrait that provides an opportunity for readers to explore and enjoy the complexity and contradiction that was Gordon Matta-Clark"--

"Christo (born 1935) and Jeanne-Claude (1935–2009) have always compared their work to that of urban planners. And it is true that the projects they have carried out around the world since the 1960s not only have huge dimensions but are also at the center of public debates and disputes. The very fact that their projects are subject to approval by local authorities makes them sometimes resemble public construction projects more than works of art. For the first time, this book gives a comprehensive account of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s urban projects. It presents preparatory drawings, collages and models for many little-known works from the artists’ early career, some of which were never carried out, such as the planned wrapping of several New York City skyscrapers, as well as the spectacular large-scale projects of later years, such as the wrapping of the Pont Neuf bridge in Paris in 1985, the wrapping of the Reichstag building in Berlin in 1995 and the 2005 installation The Gates in New York’s Central Park. In two detailed essays, the authors of the book explore Christo’s extraordinary talent for drawing and investigate the artists’ ambivalent perspective on urban space, which oscillates between a powerful critique of the city’s impersonal modernism and a tribute to the liberal, democratic use of urban areas"--Publisher's website.

For more than fifty years, James Turrell (*1943, Los Angeles), one of the most prominent artists of our time, has devoted himself to the exploration of the (im)materiality and perception of light. Turrell succeeds like no other artist in making it possible to experience light as an artistic medium through the senses and the intellect alike. He himself describes his art as "perceptual art." In his large installations the artist floods accessible spaces with light, which spills out in soft seas of color or intensely glowing, luminous fogs, taking viewers to the limits of their perception. This book provides a comprehensive view of Turrell's oeuvre and unites works of art from various phases of his career from the 1960s onward.
