In a world ruled by seemingly continuous and increasingly complex conflicts, questions about justice, about 'the right' course of action, are at the forefront of artistic investigation. In *Aesthetic Justice* sociologist Pascal Gielen and curator Niels Van Tomme invite a variety of artists and critical thinkers to reflect on new futures for the notion and practice of justice. Launching the proposition of 'aesthetic justice', the book offers thought-provoking views on how works of art can confront, and potentially redirect social and political imaginaries. Using analyses of contemporary art works that challenge the social, political, or economic status quo, as well as theoretical reflections and interviews with artists, this book imagines alternatives for a more just future.

Texts examine how the encounter of ethics and aesthetics has become central to the contested space of much recent art. The boundary of a contemporary art object or project is no longer something that exists only in physical space; it also exists in social, political, and ethical space. Art has opened up to transnational networks of producers and audiences, migrating into the sphere of social and distributive systems, whether in the form of “relational aesthetics” or other critical reinventions of practice. Art has thus become increasingly implicated in questions of ethics. In this volume, artist and writer Walead Beshty evaluates the relation of ethics to aesthetics, and demonstrates how this encounter has become central to the contested space of much recent art. He brings together theoretical foundations for an ethics of aesthetics; appraisals of art that engages with ethical issues; statements and examples of methodologies adopted by a diverse range of artists; and examinations of artworks that question the ethical conditions in which contemporary art is produced and experienced.

Cities are rapidly changing. Harvard’s Graduate School of Design (GSD) has turned its attention to this issue with a series of conferences. The first, Ecological Urbanism (2009), considered the urban environment within the more comprehensive framework of economic, environmental, and social concerns. The second, In the Life of Cities (2011), looked at relationships between physical characteristics of cities and the lives they engender. Ethics of the Urban examined ideas of citizenship and civic engagement, memorials and public space, and social and political borders. Although the overall tone was academic, speakers from fields unrelated to design drew people from outside the GSD to discuss topics such as the Occupy movement and the National September 11 Memorial.
