Pour la première fois depuis sa réouverture, le musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen accueille plus d'une centaine d'oeuvres (peintures, photographies, sculptures et vidéos) du XXe siècle autour du thème du miroir. Plus de cinquante artistes du début du siècle à nos jours - Bonnard, Kupka, Archipenko, Picasso, jusqu'à Smithson, Dan Graham, Pistoletto, Morris ou encore Buren et Kapoor sont représentés dans ce catalogue par des oeuvres majeures qui abordent, de manière singulière, plusieurs fonctions assignées à l'objet-miroir comme la féminité, l'autofiction, la spéculation ou encore le dialogue avec l'espace et l'architecture. La première partie de l'ouvrage est consacrée à un ensemble d'essais qui analysent la thématique du miroir dans des domaines d'expression aussi variés que la peinture, la littérature, la psychoanalyse, la philosophie, le cinéma, la photographie, et l'architecture.
