This book examines contemporary feminist visual activism(s) through the lens of embodiment(s). The contributors explore how the arts articulate and engage with the current sense of crisis and political concerns (e.g. equality, decolonization, social justice, democracy, precarity, vulnerability), negotiated with and through the body. Drawing upon the legacy of feminist art historical critique, the book scrutinizes activist strategies, practices, and resilience techniques in intersectional and transnational frameworks. It interrogates how the arts enable the creation of civil and political resilience, become engaged with politics as a response to disaster capitalism, and attempt to reform and improve society. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual culture, fine arts, women's studies, gender studies, feminism, and cultural studies.

This book provides an in-depth and thematic analysis of socially engaged art in Mainland China, exploring its critical responses to and creative interventions in China's top-down, pro-urban, and profit-oriented socioeconomic transformations. It focuses on the socially conscious practices of eight art professionals who assume the role of artist, critic, curator, educator, cultural entrepreneur, and social activist, among others, as they strive to expose the injustice and inequality many Chinese people have suffered, raise public awareness of pressing social and environmental problems, and invent new ways and infrastructures to support various underprivileged social groups.

Civil society around the world is increasingly dealing with global questions, whereby it also begins to assume transnational forms of organisation. The arts, with their ability to project alternative realities and communicate ideas, can play a key role in addressing public and political problems. In looking at different platforms, activist groups, and new forms of citizens' initiatives, this book asks how cultural and art initiatives can both question and strengthen the civil domain. Social scientists, cultural theorists, activists, and artists explore how arts and culture can offer various strategies and forms of organisation for a locally rooted society in a globally connected context.

Interrupting the City explores the ways in which artistic practices and interventions constitute the public sphere. To interrupt the city (be it digitally or materially) means to arrest the flow or circulation that the city consists of. The tactics by which this interruption is achieved may vary, ranging from a media offensive to riots in the streets, but each and every time these activities affect the public sphere, also make the public sphere. Thus, the public domain is constituted by a combination of social, political and media forces, in a continuous flux, continuously being interrupted. This book attempts to chart the conditions under which one is able to develop a voice in the public sphere, and to ask in what way these conditions could be altered by means of artistic interventions. Its contributions delve into the relations between artistic practices and the public space, including the urban relations between art and politics.

"Art and activism in the age of globalization" takes the measure of contemporary activist art. Is it a relevant practice or a pseudo-activity in the margins of its politics proper? What is the position of art and activism in the post-Fordian society of the spectacle? The book makes space for a critique of engagement as pose, but also for the present era's urgencies. Besides case studies by established figures such as Steven Cohen and Christoph Schlingensief, young pubs like Renzo Martens and Les Chiens de Navarre are also given a platform. There are also investigations into urban activism and the activism of anonymous networks, and there is special consideration for the effect of the 'War on terror' on activist practice.
