"Can art express questions about justice? Could art, perhaps, even create justice? In Aesthetic Justice, sociologist Pascal Gielen and curator Niels Van Tomme invite a variety of artists and critical thinkersincluding Zoe Beloff, Arne De Boever, Mark Fisher, Matt Fraser, Tessa Overbeek, Kerry James Marshall, Viktor Misiano, Carlos Motta, Nat Muller, Julie Atlas Muz, Gerald Raunig, Dieter Roelstraete, Hito Steyerl, Julia Svetlichnaja, Hakan Topal, Samuel Vriezen and Christian Wolffto reflect on new futures for the notion and practice of justice. The book offers thought-provoking views on the ways in which art may confront and potentially redirect social and political futures. Incorporating analyses of contemporary artworks that challenge the social, political or economic status quo, as well as interviews with artists and theoretical reflections, Aesthetic Justice considers the liberating potential of aesthetic frameworks and suggests alternatives for a more just future." --publisher's website.

Texts examine how the encounter of ethics and aesthetics has become central to the contested space of much recent art. The boundary of a contemporary art object or project is no longer something that exists only in physical space; it also exists in social, political, and ethical space. Art has opened up to transnational networks of producers and audiences, migrating into the sphere of social and distributive systems, whether in the form of “relational aesthetics” or other critical reinventions of practice. Art has thus become increasingly implicated in questions of ethics. In this volume, artist and writer Walead Beshty evaluates the relation of ethics to aesthetics, and demonstrates how this encounter has become central to the contested space of much recent art. He brings together theoretical foundations for an ethics of aesthetics; appraisals of art that engages with ethical issues; statements and examples of methodologies adopted by a diverse range of artists; and examinations of artworks that question the ethical conditions in which contemporary art is produced and experienced.

Current art world statistics demonstrate that the fight for gender and race equality in the art world is far from over : only sixteen percent of this year's Venice Biennale artists were female ; only fourteen percent of the work displayed at MoMA in 2016 was by nonwhite artists ; only a third of artists represented by U.S. galleries are female, but over two-thirds of students enrolled in art and art-history programs are young women. Arranged in thematic sections focusing on feminism, race, and sexuality, Curatorial Activism examines and illustrates pioneering examples of exhibitions that have broken down boundaries and demonstrated that new approaches are possible, from Linda Nochlin's 'Women Artists' at LACMA in the mid-1970s to Jean-Hubert Martin's 'Carambolages' in 2016 at the Grand Palais in Paris. Including interviews with pioneering curators such as Okwui Enwezor, Linda Nochlin, Jean-Hubert Martin, and Nan Goldin, this volume is both an invaluable source of practical information for those who understand that institutions must be a driving force in this area and a vital source of inspiration for today's expanding new generation of curators.
