"Migration has been a phenomenon throughout human history but today, as a result of economic hardship, conflict and globalization, a higher percentage of people than ever before live outside their country of birth. Increased international migration has resulted in more movement of information, traditions and cultures. Migration acts as a catalyst: not only for social change, but also for the generation of new aesthetic phenomena. The Culture of Migration explores the ways in which culture and the arts have been transformed by migration in recent decades--and, in turn, how these cultural and aesthetic transformations have contributed to shaping our identities, politics and societies.Making an important contribution to the emerging cross-disciplinary field of migration studies, this book examines contemporary cultural and artistic representations of migration and gathers new perspectives on the subject from across the disciplines of the arts and humanities. Renowned and emerging scholars in the field of migration, culture and aesthetics--among them the distinguished theorists Mieke Bal, Nikos Papastergiadis, Roger Bromley and Edward Casey--address the broader themes and underlying discourses of recent studies in migration and culture."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

How have artists over the past 150 years related to migration and exile ? And what role can a museum play in times of mass migration ? Taking as its starting point the 2019 exhibition 'Migration : Traces in an Art Collection', which featured more than a hundred works from Malmö Konstmuseum made between 1880 and today, this publication brings to light the radical approach of museum director Ernst Fischer, who in 1945 transformed the museum into a refugee shelter for survivors of German concentration camps. It also highlights the museum's long-forgotten Latvian Collection, comprised of art acquired in solidarity with the young Baltic nation and its exiles. Contrasting works by exiled artists such as Sonia Delaunay-Terk, Lotte Laserstein, Endre Nemes, and Peter Weiss further animate the discussion, as do the geopolitical concerns of Pia Arke, Öyvind Fahlström, and Charlotte Johannesson. Correspondingly, a conversation with the exhibition's curators foregrounds the ways in which today's artists reflect upon and articulate experiences of migration. Together, these re-readings of the collection and its potential contribute to an urgent debate on the role of museums in our time

"The Landing Strip is a photographic series by artist Kader Attia that documents the lives of a group of Algerian Transgender sex workers living in Paris in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Focusing on the group’s shared intimacy, and taken of over a period of roughly two years, Attia sought to capture and present the real lives of those in the community. The title of the series is the name given by the women to the Boulevard on which they work. This long straight road, which separates the centre of Paris from its suburbs, resembles an airport runway. Featuring more than 140 illustrations that trace the events from day into night, and an essay by Tarek El-Ariss, Associate Professor and chair of Middle Eastern Studies at Dartmouth University, this book is an honest and personal insight into the lives and relationships of a group on the periphery of society."
