"Marcel Duchamp made exhibition practice an important part of his work. Curatorial gestures and concepts that determined the staging of his works and allowed him to move away from canonical definitions of the artist; publications and photographic documentations and of his New York studios; themes, contributions and layout drafts for art magazines; his activity as a consultant, juror and staging curator for exhibitions in the contexts of American Modernism, Dada and Surrealism; the notable influence on important private collections of his time--every conceivable aspect of curating, exhibiting and collecting have gained a qualitatively new artistic dimension in Duchamp's work. While deliberately distancing himself from given structures of artistic work, he approached a concept of curatorial practice as an aesthetic medium that is today well established. According to the pointed thesis of the symposium and the publication here, he was one of the first 'artist curators' and, thus, decisively influenced the reception of his own work as well as the art historical development of exhibition practice. Duchamp gave a new conceptual direction to the multiple possibilities for perception and open perspectives of interpretation of his oeuvre, via the staging, reproduction and multiplication of his own and others' works, which subsequently defined a turn in contemporary art. Principles of exhibition practice became decisive factors in the constitution of a work. This volume compiles the contributions of a symposium at Daimler Art Collection (25./26. April 2017), and is probably the first substantial publication on this subject. It brings together eight essays by renowned authors analyzing the status of Duchamp's varied curatorial gestures"--Publisher's website.

This volume originates from an international conference (Oxford University, 2007). Texts address plaster casts and related themes from antiquity to the present day, and from Egypt to America, Mexico and New Zealand. They are of interest to classical archaeologists, art historians, the history of collecting, curators, conservators, collectors and artists. Articles explore the functions, status and reception of plaster casts in artists' workshops and in private and public collections, as well as hands-on issues, such as the making, trading, display and conservation of plaster casts. Case-studies on artists' use of material and technique include ancient Roman copyists, Renaissance sculptors and painters, Dutch 17th-century workshops, Canova, Boccioni and others. A second theme is the role of plaster casts in the history of collecting from the Renaissance to the present day.Several papers address the dissemination of visual ideas, models and ideals through the medium. Papers on modern and contemporary art illuminate the changing uses and semantic values of plaster casts in this period. Amongst the types of casts discussed are artists' models and final works as well as casts after antiquities, including sculpture, architecture and gems (dactyliothecae). The volume demonstrates the richness of the field, both in terms of the material itself and modern scholarship concerned with it. Conceived as a handbook for students, academics, curators and collectors, the text will form a standard work on the role of plaster casts in the history of Western sculpture.

During seven years, 16 performers spread 'Lecture For Every One' throughout Europe. They intervened in more than 300 different gatherings, from a corporate sales meeting to a brass-band rehearsal and a municipal council. As uninvited guests, they addressed every one with exactly the same text. Until now, the project has remained largely invisible to the wider public. This book now sheds light on the information and expertise Lecture For Every One has generated?feedback, stories and memories from a range of perspectives. It reflects on how places where people gather can become political instances, on the (im)possibility of addressing every one, and on the value of fiction in our daily lives. Sarah Vanhee is an artist, performer and writer. Her interdisciplinary work moves between the civilian space and the institutional arts sector, and is best known for its radical gestures and its engagement with non-dominant voices and narratives. Since 2007 she has created several onstage performances, (semi-)public interventions and site-specific works that have been widely presented internationally.
