"Art & Crisis is the first volume in a new series that deals with the state of the world and cultural theories from the perspective of contemporary artistic practices and pedagogical instruments. Starting from the Master of Fine Arts of the Zurich University of the Arts and edited by MFA Director Dr. Ing. Donatella Bernardi, the aim of the series is to replace the traditional exhibition catalog of the "Degree Show" with a theoretical publication that shows the way the artists have embarked during the year, and to explore how one finds itself Zurich-based educational institution in the global (art) world. For this first volume artistic, philosophical and visual essays as well as contributions of the MFA students and their professional participants are summarized under the title "Art & Crisis". Other contributions include a discussion between the Swiss curators Judith Welter and Ian Wooldridge about the MFA Degree Show 2017, image and text contributions by MFA lecturers Dominique Lämmli and Erik Steinbrecher, and an essay by MFA student Caroline Ann Baur on the possible future of femininity"--Translation of publisher's description.

A pioneering survey of leading and emerging global artists, curators, and art practitioners on the question: can art aid in conflict resolution and therefore reduce global tensions and human suffering? Throughout the centuries, art has documented the atrocities of wars, participated in propaganda campaigns, and served as an advocate for peace and social justice around the world. The aim of this project is to explore how art can assist in creating dialogue and bridges across cultures and opposing groups. Over 100 leading and emerging architects, artists, curators, choreographers, composers, and directors of art institutions around the globe explore the potentially constructive role of the arts in conflict resolution. A summarizing chapter maps out the diverse positions and examines the variety of themes and approaches that were brought up. The book's clear multicultural positive social perspective makes the book relevant to various audiences, from art lovers to interdisciplinary global audiences of readers interested in conflict resolution, anthropology, social psychology, cultural studies, and art management.
