©Electre 2018

When Attitudes Become the Norm is a collection of essays and interviews by art historian and theorist Beti Žerovc on the topic of curatorship in contemporary art. Žerovc examines curatorship in its broader social, political and economic contexts, as well as in relation to the profound changes that have taken place in the art field over the last century. She analyses the curator as a figure who appears, evolves, and participates in the institutionalisation of contemporary art and argues that with the curator institutional art-art designed to fit the art institution's space and needs-achieves its fullest expression.

The Hamburger Kunsthalle is showing the most extensive retrospective to date of the work of Belgian artist Philippe Vandenberg (1952-2009), comprising some 80 paintings and over 120 drawings and prints. This is the first show devoted to Vandenberg in Germany, inviting visitors to discover an important artist who may be unfamiliar to them. Highly acclaimed in his home country of Belgium, Vandenberg produced a radical and unsparing œuvre that is just now achieving greater international prominence. The title of the exhibition, Kamikaze, describes the artist's drastic working methods and results, a basic precept of which is that creativity is only possible through the deliberate destruction of what has gone before. Going beyond any single artistic "style", Vandenberg created complex images of our times which resonate with both contemporary pertinence and existential significance. The majority of the works on loan came from the artist's estate and are now being presented to the public for the first time.

The work's of New York based artist Kara Walker (b. 1969) have been featured prominently in exhibitions around the world since the mid-1990s. Walker is renowned for her candid explorations of race, gender, sexuality and violence, from drawings, prints, murals, shadow puppets, cut-paper silhouettes, and projections to large-scale sculptural installations, often referencing the history of slavery and the antebellum American South. Now, Walker is creating the latest Hyundai Commission in Tate Modern's Turbine Hall. Documenting the work's creation, this book includes images of the work in process as well as the final installation. Walker introduces a personal selection of archival images and artworks that have influenced her during the genesis of this work. Essays by curator Clara Kim and a specially commissioned piece by the celebrated writer Zadie Smith offer fresh and intriguing insights into Walker's life and career.https://www.copyrightbookshop.be/shop/kara-walker-fons-americanus-hyundai-commission/

Absence, etc. is the first monograph on Philippe Vandenberg since his death in 2009. The book is richly illustrated and invites the reader to consider the artist’s oeuvre as a whole. Throughout the book Vandenberg’s trajectory can be followed, as he regularly shifted directions, taking stylistic and formal detours, experimenting with figurative expression, lyrical abstraction, graffiti-like and comics-informed figuration, to finally resort to monochromes and word- and text-based paintings. Edited by Prof. Dr. Wouter Davidts (Ghent University). With texts by Davidts and Dr. David Anfam (Clyfford-Still-Museum, Denver), an interview between Dr. Ronny Delrue and Philippe Vandenberg, and the transcription of a seminar between Dr. Jo Applin (Courtauld Institute of Art, London), Prof. Dr. Anna Dezeuze (École Supérieure d’Art et de Design Marseille-Méditerranée), Prof. Dr. Maarten Liefooghe (Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Brussels), Dr. Raphäel Pirenne (erg, La Cambre, Brussels), Dr. Merel van Tilburg (University of Geneva) and Prof. Dr. John C.
