"Better Read Than Dead" was the title Seth Siegelaub had chosen for an anthology of his own writing-one of the projects for which he never found the time, busy as he was running his global one-man operation. The selected writings, interviews, extended bibliography and chronology in this source book fill historical gaps in the sprawling network of exhibitions, publications, projects, and collections that constitute Siegelaub's life's work. "Siegelaubian paperwork" comprises Siegelaub's writings, which are reproduced as scans in order to convey the variety of the documents and to give a sense of archival immersion. Interspersed with these "writings" are interviews and talks, several newly transcribed. The majority of interviews from 1969-1972 are reprinted here.

"Marcel Duchamp made exhibition practice an important part of his work. Curatorial gestures and concepts that determined the staging of his works and allowed him to move away from canonical definitions of the artist; publications and photographic documentations and of his New York studios; themes, contributions and layout drafts for art magazines; his activity as a consultant, juror and staging curator for exhibitions in the contexts of American Modernism, Dada and Surrealism; the notable influence on important private collections of his time--every conceivable aspect of curating, exhibiting and collecting have gained a qualitatively new artistic dimension in Duchamp's work. While deliberately distancing himself from given structures of artistic work, he approached a concept of curatorial practice as an aesthetic medium that is today well established. According to the pointed thesis of the symposium and the publication here, he was one of the first 'artist curators' and, thus, decisively influenced the reception of his own work as well as the art historical development of exhibition practice. Duchamp gave a new conceptual direction to the multiple possibilities for perception and open perspectives of interpretation of his oeuvre, via the staging, reproduction and multiplication of his own and others' works, which subsequently defined a turn in contemporary art. Principles of exhibition practice became decisive factors in the constitution of a work. This volume compiles the contributions of a symposium at Daimler Art Collection (25./26. April 2017), and is probably the first substantial publication on this subject. Raising Frankenstein" presents compelling new writing that explores the education and formation of curators. The future of curatorial practice: how education, research, and institutions can adapt to the expansion of the curatorial field.Today curators are sometimes more famous than the artists whose work they curate, and curatorship involves more than choosing objects for an exhibition. The expansion of the curatorial field in recent decades has raised questions about exhibition-making itself and the politics of production, display, and distribution. The Curatorial Conundrum looks at the burgeoning field of curatorship and tries to imagine its future. Indeed, practitioners and theorists consider a variety of futures: the future of curatorial education; the future of curatorial research; the future of curatorial and artistic practice; and the institutions that will make these other futures possible.The contributors examine the proliferation of graduate programs in curatorial studies over the last twenty years, and consider what can be taught without giving up what is precisely curatorial, within the ever-expanding parameters of curatorial practice in recent times. They discuss curating as collaborative research, asking what happens when exhibition operates as a mode of research in its own right. They explore curatorial practice as an exercise in questioning the world around us; and they speculate about what it will take to build new, innovative, and progressive curatorial research institutions.

When Attitudes Become the Norm is a collection of essays and interviews by art historian and theorist Beti Žerovc on the topic of curatorship in contemporary art. This is an anthology of essays that first appeared in The Artist as Curator, a series that occupied eleven issues of Mousse from no. 41 (December 2013/January 2014) to no. 51 (December 2015/January 2016). It set out to examine what was then a profoundly influential but still under-studied phenomenon, a history that had yet to be written: the fundamental role artists have played as curators. Taking that ontologically ambiguous thing we call “the exhibition” as a critical medium, artists have often radically rethought conventional forms of exhibition making. This anthology surveys seminal examples of such exhibitions from the postwar to the present, including rare documents and illustrations.
