Les montagnards sont-ils différents ? Sont-ils façonnés par l’espace qu’ils arpentent ? D’où vient leur esprit de famille ou, si l’on préfère, leur goût pour les clans ? On a vu parfois dans les montagnes archaïques et solitaires des réservoirs de prêtres, on a dit qu’elles hébergeaient facilement les maquisards, les insoumis, les sorciers, les juifs, les cathares... Vingt-neuf chercheurs sont allés voir de près. Ils ont bien découvert des familles de prêtres, de ces clans qui donnent à leurs cadets les bases de l’écriture et de la lecture : de quoi en faire en effet des prêtres, mais aussi des colporteurs et des instituteurs... Ils ont mis en valeur la singularité de ces clergés montagnards : prêts à se sacrifier pour leurs familles, pour leurs ancêtres, pour leur foi, pour un absolu, dans toutes les religions, et surtout en cas de faiblesse des pouvoirs supérieurs. Ils ont vu que ces familles devaient trouver en elles-mêmes les règles de leur survie : des subsistances pour le corps, les écritures pour rendre des comptes ; des symboles pour rêver, des rites pour échapper à l’angoisse et d’autres pour maintenir la vie à tout prix. Espace fragile, isolé, grandiose, la montagne s’impose à l’homme dans ses excès. Les hommes des montagnes croient toujours qu’ils ne sont pas tout à fait comme les autres, même et surtout quand ils sont en plaine.

The 2015 TRAC proceedings feature a selection of 14 papers summing up some of the key sessions presented at the conference held at the University of Leicester in March 2015, which drew over 180 delegates of 17 nationalities from a variety of universities, museums, and research institutions in the UK, Europe, and North America. As this conference marked the 25th anniversary of TRAC, the volume opens with a preface commemorating the last 25 years with an eye toward the future direction of both conference and community. The proceedings begin with Dr Andrew Gardner's keynote paper on the topic of 'Debating Roman Imperialism: Critique, Construct, Repeat?'. This is followed by an array of papers with topics ranging in geographic scope and period, from small finds in early Roman Britain to bathing practices Late Antique North Africa, and from the investigation of deviant burials to the application of urban scaling theory in Roman contexts. Because of this diversity the volume is not broken into specific sections, however, papers with similar themes are grouped accordingly, allowing the text to flow and be read as a whole. The range of contributing authors is also of note, as papers were submitted by PhD students, post-doctoral researchers, and university faculty, all helping to make the 25th anniversary of this series one that continues to emphasis and reflect the aims of TRAC, both as a conference and as a conduit for exploring more theory-driven approaches to the Roman past.

Research in religious studies has traditionally focused on adult subjects since working with children presents significantly more challenges to the researcher, such as getting the research protocol passed by the Internal Review Board, obtaining permission from parents and schools, and figuring out how to make sense of young worldviews. The Study of Children in Religions provides scholars with a comprehensive source to assist them in addressing many of the issues that often stop researchers from pursuing projects involving children. This handbook offers a broad range of methodological and conceptual models for scholars interested in conducting work with children. It not only illuminates some of the legal and ethical issues involved in working with youth and provides guidance in getting IRB approval, but also presents specific case studies from scholars who have engaged in child-centered research and here offer the fruits of their experience. Cases include those that use interviews and drawings to work with children in contemporary settings, as well as more historically focused endeavors to use material culture—such as Sunday school projects or religious board games—to study children’s religious lives in past eras.
