As urban living intensifies in density and numbers, the city landscape expands both outwards and upwards. Architects and urban designers craft new and experimental structures while also investigating existing buildings for potential reinvention or expansion. In particular, the roof of a building, once a perfunctory structural element, is now a city space in and of itself, beloved for the capacity to eke out further room for living or to craft inspiring refuges away from the bustle of the metropolis. This international selection of urban rooftops catalogs a new urban dimension. Through over 50 bars, restaurants, temporary art installations, and gardens, it testifies to the variety of intelligent and exuberant designs that grace city summits from Sydney to Hong Kong, Oslo to Chicago. Whether it's the panoramic views, the exposure to the elements, or a slight giddiness that comes with height, we see just how the roof has nurtured not only architectural invention but a whole new facet and thrill to city living. Just like its predecessors Tree Houses and Cabins, Urban Rooftops features both brilliant photography and bright, contemporary illustration. As with all books in TASCHEN's architecture series, it also celebrates both the established and the rising talents of the industry. Featured artists in this movement towards the skies include Pritzker Prize winners Norman Foster and Shigeru Ban, Jeffrey Inaba, Julien de Smedt (JDS), and landscape designers such as Ken Smith and Vladimir Djurovic.

The exterior of a building functions as a loadbearing structure and as a protective envelope. It can also be used to express status. But what are the available principles of enveloping? And what are the formal and functional criteria for selecting a facade system? The fifth volume of the SCALE series, Enclose | Build, deals with building enclosures: options include different construction methods, materials and surfaces with which a wide variety of design effects can be achieved. The book illustrates how the interaction between loadbearing structure and building envelope - from its base, via the outside wall, tot the roof - functions, and what the criteria are for selecting a facade system, which range from solid, single-skin walls to complex facade systems. Enclose | Build is a vital tool for every architect and designer.

"Affordable building lots in central locations in the large cities and metropolises are rare. When there are no available gaps in the urban structure, attic conversions and extensions are an interesting and favoured form of redensification. This volume explores approximately 60 attic projects, as extensions, conversions, or new construction, which utilise the previously used storage space for new use. Existing buildings are expanded upwards and adapted to the contemporary desires and demands of their use. Some constitute a homogenous extension of the existing facade and augment the view in a barely noticeable way. Others use the design freedom above the eave height in order to create a 21st century architecture which contrasts with the historical building substance."--Publisher description.

Gleaned from texts written from the 1970s onwards, this volume collects practical information on the construction of roofs and shelters that were intended to meet the material needs of impoverished peoples in the Global South. It is representative of architect Yona Friedman’s foresight in those years, as he had already decided to focus his interventions on how to include the inhabitants in the design of their habitat and dwellings. Besides being tested for UNESCO, Friedman’s manuals include essential “blackboard” sketches. Ultimately, ‘Roofs’ highlights the fact that the various issues facing modern cities are the result of irresponsible attitudes towards our planet.

Stepped terrace housing is a building that more than meets modern housing requirements: it is economical and offers ample living space with the comfort of terrace and garden. First rising to popularity with the advent of new social movements in the 1960s, it was then forgotten as the fresh ideas of society progressively eroded. However, the enduring satisfaction of residents and ecological advantages of buildings covered in greenery make stepped terrace housing as attractive as ever. The buildings studied in the book are not only architectural icons ; one can learn so much from them about what residential buildings need today. One proponent of this building style was Harry Glück, passage of whose plea to build Green Cities can be reade in this volume.
