"Inside-Outside is an honest account of Richard Price's life as an anthropologist, historian, art historian, and Caribbeanist. In addition to narrating his experiences with the Saaramaka in Surinam and maroons in Guyane, this memoir also details Price's encounters with the likes of Claude Levi-Strauss and Sidney Mintz. By detailing his life from his time as a precocious high school student visiting Navajo and Hopi homelands to his flight from authorities in Suriname to receiving the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres from the French Minister of Culture, Price guides readers through hallowed halls and jungle paths to illuminate the truths of a unique life. These same adventures also allow readers to look over Price's shoulders-and those of his wife and research partner, Sally Price-and through his field notes as he researched and wrote some of the most important books of the twentieth century. Furthermore, having held positions at Yale, Johns Hopkins, and William & Mary while also surviving as an unaffiliated scholar for a number of years, Price offers serious reflections on the inner workings of academic life during the past half-century. The presence of Surinamese and (in smaller numbers) Antilleans in our country has become familiar here since the 1960s. Much has also been written on this subject. Less known is the history of the Surinamese and Antilleans who came to the Netherlands before, "starting with slaves brought by Dutch families from" the West "and ending with students and intellectuals who came here for education and training, and some of which remained forever. This book fills a gap by telling their story, sometimes in general terms, sometimes with biographical details. It consists of two separate chapters, one about the Surinamese (G. Indischei) and one about the Antilleans (E. Maduro). Separate pages are devoted to some well-known figures: Anton de Kom and Albert Helman (Sur), and Cola Debrot and Boeli van Leeuwen (Ned. Ant.). The book is distinguished by a careful set-up, with an extensive bibliography and notes.

In today’s Europe, migrant domestic workers are indispensable in supporting many households which, without their employment, would lack sufficient domestic and care labour. Black Girls collects and explores the stories of some of the first among these workers. They are the Afro-Surinamese and the Eritrean women who in the 1960's and 70's migrated to the former colonising country, the Netherlands and Italy respectively, and there became domestic and care workers. Sabrina Marchetti analyses the narratives of some of these women in order to powerfully demonstrate how the legacies of the colonial past have been, at the same time, both their tool of resistance and the reason for their subordination.
