Abstract

This book illustrates the use of complex statistical models in medical and health sciences. The use of these models by researchers contributes to the understanding of more complex processes and thus advances knowledge. The various chapters describe how an ordinal logistic model is applied to disabilities, a model in structural equations to an emergency code, multi-state models for the analysis of time-to-event data and Copula models to agitation-sedation scores, spatial models to epidemiology, and statistical methods to clinical trials and to N-of-1 trial design.

Abstract

By virtue of the dynamic nature of the scientific process, the description of the type, pathogenesis and treatment of a disease is always a work in progress. The complex nature of any disease can similarly be unveiled through understanding the historical context of our current understanding, examining prevailing hypotheses, and extrapolating horizons for new research. For better development of this book, the main objective was to provide insights on the types, causes, and treatments of psoriasis. This approach might substantially improve the transference of disease knowledge for physicians and intended to improve quality of medical services that endorses training of excellence and assesses the qualifications of physicians, most of whom will be naive to clinical dermatological practices.

Abstract

This special issue resulted from the invitation made to selected authors to contribute with an overview of a specific subject of their choice, and is based on a collection of papers chosen to exemplify some of the interests, uses and views of the epidemiology across different areas of research and practice. Rather than the comprehensiveness and coherence of a conventional textbook, readers will find a set of independent chapters, each of them of a great interest in their own specialized areas within epidemiology. Taken together, they illustrate the contrast between the attempt to extend the limits of applicability of epidemiological research, and the "regular" scientific activity in this field or an applied epidemiology. Epidemiologists with different levels of expertise and interests will be able to find informative and inspiring readings among the chapters of this book.

Abstract

Skin Biopsy - Diagnosis and Treatment is a collection of six chapters that includes an initial chapter on the site selection of a skin biopsy that optimizes diagnosis of various dermatological diseases and in many instances it is a therapeutic intervention and is useful in monitoring the response to therapy. The following five chapters encompass the application and role of skin biopsy to the overall diagnosis of certain conditions such as non-scarring and scarring alopecia, Langerhan cell neoplasms, severe cutaneous adverse reactions, pemphigus vulgaris and foliaceus, and oral lichen planus. An accurate diagnosis allows for an up to date discussion on the treatment of these complex conditions as the pathogenesis and the histologic findings are evolving and the therapeutic options are concomitantly emerging.

Abstract

Skin Biopsy - Perspectives is a comprehensive compilation of articles that relate to the technique and applications of skin biopsy in diagnosing skin diseases. While there have been numerous treatises to date on the interpretation or description of skin biopsy findings in various skin diseases, books dedicated entirely to perfecting the technique of skin biopsy have been few and far between. This book is an attempt to bridge this gap. Though the emphasis of this book is on use of this technique in skin diseases in humans, a few articles on skin biopsy in animals have been included to acquaint the reader to the interrelationship of various scientific disciplines. All aspects of the procedure of skin biopsy have been adequately dealt with so as to improve biopsy outcomes for patients, which is the ultimate goal of this work.
