Abstract

The last 30 years have seen a revived interest in Henry of Ghent, one of the leading theologians at the University of Paris in the last quarter of the 13th century. This volume offers a new and comprehensive study of a central aspect of Henry’s philosophical thought: his understanding of metaphysics. The study examines why, according to Henry, there has to be a science investigating being qua being and how such an inquiry is at all possible. In Henry’s conception, metaphysics is not just one scientific discipline among others but the first and fundamental one for it deals with the first object of the intellect as its subject-matter. The recognition of this understanding, as the present study intends to show, opens a new perspective on the proper philosophical dimension of Henry of Ghent’s thought.

Abstract

Meister Eckhart spent some twenty years in the Dominican convent in Erfurt, first as prior and then as first provincial of the order's province of Saxonia. Although in recent years the great significance of Meister Eckhart's time in Erfurt, between the periods he spent in Paris, has become increasingly more evident, Eckhart research has on the whole devoted less attention to his years in Erfurt than to his time in Paris, Strasbourg and Cologne. The present volume addresses the need for more research into Eckhart's time in Erfurt. The 27 papers address the most important trends in recent research into Eckhart and inquire into the consequences these have for our assessment of Meister Eckhart.

Abstract

Given that the dissemination of enlightened thought in Europe was mostly effected through translations, the present collection of essays focuses on how its cultural adaptation took place in various national contexts. For the first time, the theoretical model of ‘cultural transfer’ (Espagne/Werner) is applied to the eighteenth century: The intercultural dynamics of the Enlightenment become manifest in the transformation process between the original and target cultures, be it by way of acculturation, creative enhancement, or misunderstanding. Resulting in shifts of meaning, translations offer a key not just to contemporary translation practice but to the discursive network of the European Enlightenment in general. The case studies united here explore both how translations contributed to the transnational standardisation of certain key concepts, values and texts, and how they reflect national specifications of enlightened discourses. Hence, the volume contributes to Enlightenment studies, at least as much as to historical translation studies.

Abstract

Today 4.7 million Americans have been unemployed for more than six months. In France more than ten percent of the working population is without work. In Israel it's above seven percent. And in Greece and Spain, that number approaches thirty percent. Across the developed world, the experience of unemployment has become frighteningly common-and so are the seemingly endless tactics that job seekers employ in their quest for new work. Flawed System/Flawed Self delves beneath these staggering numbers to explore the world of job searching and unemployment across class and nation. Through in-depth interviews and observations at job-search support organizations, Ofer Sharone reveals how different labor-market institutions give rise to job-search games like Israel's résumé-based "spec games"-which are focused on presenting one's skills to fit the job-and the "chemistry games" more common in the United States in which job seekers concentrate on presenting the person behind the résumé. By closely examining the specific day-to-day activities and strategies of searching for a job, Sharone develops a theory of the mechanisms that connect objective social structures and subjective experiences in this challenging environment and shows how these different structures can lead to very different experiences of unemployment.
