Early modern views of nature and the earth upended the depiction of land. Landscape emerged as a site of artistic exploration at a time when environments and ecologies were reshaped and transformed. This volume historicises the contingency of an ever-changing elemental world, reframing and reimagining landscape as a mediating space in the interplay between the natural and the artificial, the real and the imaginary, the internal and the external. The lens of the 'unruly' reveals the latent landscapes that undergirded their conception, the elemental resources that resurfaced from the bowels of the earth, the staged topographies that unsettled the boundaries between nature and technology, and the fragile ecologies that undermined the status quo of human environs.

"The essays in this book provide interesting contributions to the ongoing debate concerning the representation of differing cultures, i.e., the 'image of the Other' in the early modern period. They deal with images, projections, and perceptions, based on various experiences of coexistence. Although the individual contributions contain sources and references of iconography, this is not just another volume of art history or visual studies. As examples of practices in diverse historical contexts, the book includes a variety of textual material, such as literary productions, rhetorical exercises, dramatic applications, chronicles, epistles, and diary-like historical accounts that express ethnographic sensitivities. Thus, supported by a thorough research apparatus, these studies propose a new cultural history of the early modern coexistence of various communities, as identified in current research by young scholars. For the first time ever, the present anthology deals in depth with the early age of the sedan chair in Europe, in other words, the period between the late Middle Ages and the beginning of the 18th century. It comprises seven essays by international researchers describing the introduction and establishment of the sedan chair in various different European centres of power. The contributions focus on developments at the papal court, in Genoa, in the Spanish monarchy, at the Viceregal Court of Naples, at the courts of the Austrian Hapsburgs, at the Bavarian court, and in France.

This book is the first to focus on a paradox of anatomical images from the Renaissance to the 18th century: the representation of skeletons and flayed figures in a state of animation, i. e. apparently endowed with life despite the logical impossibility of this being so.
