Abstract

Fluorescein angiography is an indispensable tool in modern ophthalmology. It is founded on the evaluation of phenomena related to the behavior intravenously administered sodium fluorescein in the tissues of the ocular fundus. Commonly, texts on fluorescein angiography merely describe the typical pattern, quality, and quantity of the phenomena specific to a variety of vascular and other diseases of the retina and choroid. In contrast, the present book deals with the morphological prerequisites and structural changes on which the individual phenomena are based. This knowledge provides the retina specialist, the general ophthalmologist, and the basic scientist alike with valuable information toward understanding the nature and mechanism of the underlying disorders. The book represents a unique mixture of textbook and atlas, always combining concise statements in English, German, and Spanish on one page with didactically conceived explanatory illustrations on the facing page.

Abstract

During recent years, FAF (Fundus autofluorescence) imaging has been shown to be useful in various retinal diseases with regard to diagnostics, documentation of changes, identification of disease progression, and monitoring of novel therapies. Hereby, FAF imaging gives additional information above and beyond conventional imaging tools. This unique atlas provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of FAF imaging in retinal diseases. It also compares FAF findings with other imaging techniques such as fundus photograph, fluorescein- and ICG angiography as well as optical coherence tomography. General ophthalmologists as well as retina specialists will find this a very useful guide which illustrates typical FAF characteristics of various retinal diseases.

Abstract

The technology of angiographic systems has been improved tremendously just within the past few years. This has allowed greatly increased levels of image resolution for both fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography. This new atlas by Dithmar and Holz covers the basic principles of the new methods for fluorescein- and indocyanine green-angiography, as well as the high resolution imaging of fundus autofluorescence. The angiographic signs of retinal and choroidal diseases are illustrated with images taken from a series of clinically relevant case examples that specifically illustrate the advantages of higher image resolution for the study of common retinochoroidal disorders. In so doing, this atlas offers an all-encompassing survey of the many angiographic signs in these disorders and their differential diagnoses. Clinicians in all subspecialties of ophthalmology can profit from a better understanding of these pathophysiological phenomena.

Abstract

Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC), cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) are three nanometric forms of the most abundant natural polymer (viz. cellulose), and are currently under the spotlight in numerous fields of modern science and technology. The eco-friendly connotations, peculiar features, and multiple functionalities of these nanoscale cellulosic substrates are being explored to engineer advanced nanocomposites and nanohybrid materials for application in manifold domains, such as mechanics, optics, electronics, energy, environment, biology, and medicine. The aim of this Special Issue titled “Advanced Nanocellulose-Based Materials: Production, Properties, and Applications” is to gather original research and review contributions from the world-leading scientists working with nanocellulose. Thus, research that is representative of the current developments dealing with the production methodologies, properties, and applications of nanocellulose-based materials (e.g., nanocomposites, hybrids, aerogels, hydrogels, films, and fibers) are presented in the Special Issue.

Abstract

In the past several years, the otorhinolaryngology sector has had a significantimpact on social life. About 10% of the cancers that affect the populationannually concern the head and neck, and each year the guidelines evolve andchange.Emergencies of the otolaryngology sector are among the most common, withnumerous increases in hospitalizations in the ENT department (e.g., bleeding, abscesses, and dyspnoea). Interventions in the election can significantly improvepatients' quality of life and help avoid future complications.Given the importance of the medical and surgical branch of otorhinolaryngology,we want to underline the impact in social life of this important area.

Abstract

The use of biocatalysts, including enzymes and metabolically engineered cells, has attracted a great deal of attention in the chemical and bio-industry, because biocatalytic reactions can be conducted under environmentally-benign conditions and in more sustainable ways. The catalytic efficiency and chemo-, regio-, and stereo-selectivity of enzymes can be enhanced and modulated using protein engineering. Metabolic engineering seeks to enhance cellular biosynthetic productivity of target metabolites via controlling and redesigning metabolic pathways using multi-omics analysis, genome-scale modeling, metabolic flux control, and reconstruction of novel pathways. The aim of this book is to cover the recent advances in biocatalysis and metabolic engineering for biomanufacturing of biofuels, chemicals, biomaterials, and pharmaceuticals. Reviews and original research articles on the development of new strategies to improve the catalytic efficiency of enzymes, biosynthetic capability of cell factories, and their applications in production of various bioproducts and chemicals are included.
