Abstract

Abstract

Archives have become a nexus in the wake of the digital turn. Electronic files, search engines, video sites, and media player libraries make the concepts of "archival" and "retrieval" practically synonymous with the experience of interconnected computing. Archives today are the center of much attention but few agendas. Can archives inform the redistribution of power and resources when the concept of the public library as an institution makes knowledge and culture accessible to all members of society regardless of social or economic status? This book sets out to show that archives need our active support and continuing engagement. This volume offers three distinct perspectives on the present status of archives that are at once in disagreement and solidarity with each other, from contributors whose backgrounds cut across the theory-practice divide. Is the increasing digital storage of knowledge pushing us toward a turning point in its democratization? Can archives fulfill their paradoxical potential as utopian sites in which the analog and the digital, the past and future, and remembrance and forgetting commingle? Is there a downside to the present-day impulse toward total preservation?

Abstract

Abstract

"Thanks to the digital revolution, even a traditional discipline like philology has been enjoying a renaissance within academia and beyond. Decades of work have been producing groundbreaking results, raising new research questions and creating innovative educational resources. This book describes the rapidly developing state of the art of digital philology with a focus on Ancient Greek and Latin, the classical languages of Western culture. Contributions cover a wide range of topics about the accessibility and analysis of Greek and Latin sources. The discussion is organized in five sections concerning open data of Greek and Latin texts; catalogs and citations of authors and works; data entry, collection and analysis for classical philology; critical editions and annotations of sources; and finally linguistic annotations and lexical databases. As a whole, the volume provides a comprehensive outline of an emergent research field for a new generation of scholars and students, explaining what is reachable and analyzable that was not before in terms of technology and accessibility.".

Abstract

A brand new and fully updated edition of this seminal work on archival preservation. Access to archival material - the documentary heritage of people all over the world that gives them their identity and ensures their rights - is dependent on the survival of fragile materials: paper, parchment, photographic materials, audiovisual materials and, most recently, magnetic and optical formats. The primary importance of such survival is widely acknowledged but sometimes overlooked in a rush to provide ever better means of access. But without the basic material, no services can be offered. Preservation is the heart of archival activity. Archivists in all types of organizations face questions of how to plan a preservation strategy in less than perfect circumstances, or deal with a sudden emergency. This book considers the causes of threats to the basic material, outlines the preservation options available and offers flexible solutions applicable in a variety of situations. It offers a wide range of case studies and examples from international specialists. This revised edition also includes a new chapter on the management and training of volunteers, reflecting a key concern for many archival institutions. This is a vital handbook for professional archivists, but also for the many librarians, curators and enthusiasts, trained and untrained, in museums, local studies centres and voluntary societies in need of good clear advice

Abstract

Shifting Stacks examines emergent issues at the nexus of academic librarianship and theological education. It seeks to facilitate and inspire forward-thinking conversation that may guide a reorientation of theological and religious studies librarianship that is adaptive and responsive to change and emerging needs in librarianship, theological education, and the broader global community. The need for substantive conversation on these topics has grown more important and critical as the effects of the current global pandemic ripple through our institutions.

Abstract

This overview of holdings is an inventory to mark the 150th anniversary of the Landesarchiv Schleswig-Holstein, which was founded in 1870 as the Prussian Staatsarchiv Schleswig. This overview is the first printed overview that contains explanations of all individual holdings and thus facilitates orientation for the users of the Landesarchiv. Reading and leafing through the book, one can get an impression of the local records on regional history and discover many things that have not yet been researched. The book guides the reader through the extensive holdings in a compact and clear manner - if one were to put all the documents in one row, it would result in a distance of about fifty thousand linear metres.

Abstract

For over twenty years, digitisation has been a core element of the modern information landscape. The digital lifecycle is now well defined, and standards and good practice have been developed for most of its key stages. There remains, however, a widespread lack of coordination of digitisation initiatives, both within and across different sectors, and there are disparate approaches to selection criteria. The result is ‘silos’ of digitised content. Stepping away from the Silos examines the strategic context in the UK since the 1990's and its effect on collaboration and coordination of exemplar digitisation initiatives in higher education and related sectors. It identifies the principal criteria for content selection that are common to the international literature in this field. The outputs of the exemplar projects are examined in relation to these criteria. A range of common practices and patterns in content selection appears to have developed over time, forming a de facto strategy from which several areas of critical mass have emerged. The book discusses the potential to improve strategic collaboration and coordinated selection by building on such a platform, and considers planning options in the context of work on national digitisation strategies in the UK and internationally. Summarises the rise of publicly funded digitisation in the UK from the 1990's to date and identifies the need to improve coordination and content selection criteria Reviews the role of digitisation in government and organisational strategies from the 1990's to the present day Examines the strategic position of collaboration within and across different organisations Identifies common selection criteria and outlines the coverage of exemplar projects Discusses the apparent emergence of a de facto selection strategy and the potential for national strategic planning of digitised content based on existing outputs and improved collaboration
