Sonochemistry and the Acoustic Bubble provides an introduction to the way ultrasound acts on bubbles in a liquid to cause bubbles to collapse violently, leading to localized 'hot spots' in the liquid with temperatures of 5000° celcius and under pressures of several hundred atmospheres. These extreme conditions produce events such as the emission of light, sonoluminescence, with a lifetime of less than a nanosecond, and free radicals that can initiate a host of varied chemical reactions (sonochemistry) in the liquid, all at room temperature. The physics and chemistry behind the phenomen

The ICTCA conference provides an interdisciplinary forum for active researchers in academia and industry who are of varying backgrounds to discuss the state-of-the-art developments and results in theoretical and computational acoustics and related topics. The papers presented at the meeting cover acoustical problems of common interest across disciplines and their accurate mathematical and numerical modeling. This volume collects papers that were presented at the sixth meeting. The subjects include geophysics, scattering and diffraction, the parabolic equation (with special sessions in honor of

A systematic study of chaotic ray dynamics in underwater acoustics began in the mid-1990s when it was realized that this factor plays a crucial role in long-range sound propagation in the ocean. The phenomenon of ray chaos and its manifestation at a finite wavelength -- wave chaos -- have been investigated by combining methods from the theory of wave propagation and the theory of dynamical and quantum chaos. This is the first monograph summarizing results obtained in this field. Emphasis is made on the exploration of ray and modal structures of the wave field in an idealized environmental model with periodic range dependence and in a more realistic model with sound speed fluctuations induced by random internal waves. The book is intended for acousticians investigating the long-range sound transmission through the fluctuating ocean and also for researchers studying waveguide propagation in other media. It will be of major interest to scientists working in the field of dynamical and quantum chaos.

The field of acoustic engineering has many various potential applications, such as in ocean science research and homeland security. This book provides cutting-edge knowledge in current techniques and technologies, such as the adaptive technique for underwater communication, array processing and the CI/OFDM system. One chapter takes inspiration from the natural world in proposing a new bio-inspired ranging approach for resolution purposes. Technologies such as high-resolution array processing methods can also be used to locate underwater objects in sediment, as one chapter shows. Finally, two contributions cover the applications of narrowband interference suppression and iterative equalization, and decoding schemes. Given the scope of the book, it will be required reading for researchers and engineers in the field.

This book describes, using first-person accounts, the history of the development in the Soviet Union and, later, in Russia of an extremely important technical field and how that history was influenced by WWI, WWII, and the Cold War, by government bureaucracy, in both positive and negative ways, by the economic collapse of the Soviet Union, and most importantly, by the dedicated efforts of vast numbers of individuals, including some of the greatest scientific minds of the 20th century. It will make fascinating reading for engineers and scientists who were engaged in similar work in the West, fo

This book contains 67 papers presented at ICTCA2001. It includes three keynote addresses surveying the frontier developments in computational and theoretical acoustics. The papers cover aero-, seismo- and ocean acoustics, as well as ultrasonics. Computational methods, numerical simulation, theoretical analysis and experimental results are emphasized by different papers. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in: Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings)
