Nous nous déplaçons plus, plus vite et plus loin. Ces tendances lourdes interrogent les sciences sociales à plus d'un titre : la croissance des déplacements est-elle le reflet d'une transformation de la spatialisation des sociétés ? Est-elle la manifestation d'une fluidification sociale réductrice des inégalités ou, au contraire, serait-elle le signe de l'émergence de nouvelles formes de différentiations sociales fondées sur le potentiel de mobilité des acteurs ? Le présent ouvrage propose de saisir ces questions en abordant diverses facettes de la mobilité, de ses effets territoriaux et sociétaux. Les douze contributions recueillies sont autant de regards croisés, qui suggèrentque l'accroissement des mobilités spatiales va de pair avec une réticularisation des relations sociales et le développement de nouvelles formes d'inégalités sociales. Dit boek is een aangepaste versie van een doctoraatsstudie, een interdisciplinair, historisch geografisch onderzoek naar de oorsprong van de waterlopen in het middeleeuwse stad Gent. De evolutie van het landschap van Gent is gecompliceerder dan algemeen is aangenomen. Talrijke aanwijzingen op historische kaarten en toponiemen laten een complexe topografie vermoeden. De stad Gent ontstond in het rivierlandschap aan de samenvloeiing van Leie en Schelde en nabij een Tertiaire getuigenheuvel, de Blandijnberg. De oudste portus aan de Schelde werd gebouwd op een Quartaire dekzandrug. De dateringen (OSL) van twee profielen in de Zandberg in het historische centrum tonen een Laat-Glaciale ouderdom aan. De resultaten helpen om een reconstructie te maken van de microtopografie en de Quartairgeologische kaart te hertekenen. In de 12de en 13de eeuw werd een complex en multifunctioneel systeem uitgebouwd van veertien stuwen, drie dammen en verschillende dijken. Dankzij deze waterbouwkundige werken konden de inwoners van Gent de natuurlijke waterlopen en het waterpeil controleren. Een van de belangrijkste ingrepen omvatte de bouw van de Rode Torenstuw samen met de Steendam, het rechttrekken van de Leie (Novele Lis) en de aanleg van verschillende dijken. Een ander belangrijk project had betrekking op de stuw aan de Braamgaten, die de Schelde controleerde, samen met de Brabantdam en de stadswatermolen. Het megaproject op waterbouwkundig vlak was het graven van het kanaal de Lieve. In de voorbije decennia is watererfgoed in steden opnieuw belangrijk, prominent zichtbaar en toegankelijk geworden. Deze studie kan dienen bij de herwaardering en het hergebruik van de waterlopen in Gent en bij het opnieuw openleggen van gedempte waterlopen of het toegankelijk maken van de oevers.
