Any surgical intervention has potential risks and complications. Some complications are avoidable and some are not. Arthrofibrosis or stiffness may take place in the best of hands, and infection may surface postoperatively even in the most sterile operating room. How one deals with complications truly tests the skill of the surgeon. Keeping calm and focussed on the issues in the midst of an intraoperative complication will be facilitated by having an algorithmic approach. Complications in Knee and Shoulder Surgery is designed as a reference tool and a roadmap for the sports medicine orthopedist to minimize complications in knee and shoulder surgery. By understanding the functional anatomy at risk, proper surgical set up, proper equipment, and proper patient selection, a preventative approach to complications can be instituted. The authors of these chapters are leaders in orthopedic sports medicine and reveal their techniques for dealing with intraoperative complications, increasing the surgeon’s awareness of potential complications and providing advice to avoid and treat these problems effectively and rapidly should they arise.

Percutaneous coronary catheterization has become one of the most common medical interventions performed in the field of interventional cardiology. With the continual technical improvements in interventional cardiology, more procedures are being performed and higher risk patients are being treated. Complications are bound to occur, and when they do, they are distressing to the clinician. Too often, clinicians performing an interventional procedure are unprepared and lack complete familiarity with some of the possible adverse events or the many creative methods available to them to reverse or mitigate the event. This book provides the reader with a valuable overview of the complications associated with coronary interventions. The editor, Samuel M. Butman, MD, has assembled a group of contributors renowned for their expertise in interventional cardiology. Chapters are concise but comprehensive and present actual case examples for review. Topics covered include complications related to medication, coronary guidewires, coronary stenting, atherectomy devices, and radiation exposure. Useful illustrations reinforce key concepts. Complications of Percutaneous Coronary Interventions fills a void for interventional cardiologists, residents, and technologists who need to learn about effectively preventing complications or who simply want to more confidently institute appropriate treatment.

The demand for outpatient cutaneous surgery procedures has increased at a rapid rate over the last several decades. Cosmetic, oncology, and reconstructive procedures are being performed by primary care physicians and a variety of specialists in different disciplines such as dermatology, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, and otolaryngology. As the number of cutaneous surgery procedures rises, so will the rate of complications, which are inevitable and occur even with the most skilled and meticulous surgeons. This comprehensive text will enable the practicing physician to formulate a preoperative strategy to not only prevent complications before they occur but also to properly diagnose and manage complications when they arise, allowing the physician to provide optimal care to the patient.

Over the past fifty years, advanced techniques and strategies have been developed in the field of myocardial protection during heart surgery requiring cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), but trials focusing on pulmonary protection have been less frequent. Principles of Pulmonary Protection during Heart Surgery is intended as an useful tool to provide strategies for lung protection during CPB. The many renowned contributors have presented their experience on lung perfusion in both experimental and clinical trials, and have detailed numerous new ideas, concepts and future perspectives to the book. It is thus perfect as a reference for a wide range of professionals, including cardiovascular surgeons, pulmonary surgeons and pulmonologists, transplantation physicians, cardiothoracic anesthesiologists, intensive care physicians, radiologists, basic sciences physicians, cardiologists and cardiothoracic fellows, perfusionists, nurses, and researchers.
