Ästhetische Erfahrungsräume sind als Zwischenräume zu begreifen, die sowohl Aspekte des realen als auch des gedachten Raums aufweisen. Die Entgrenzung der Künste hat im 20. Jahrhundert dazu geführt, dass oftmals unterschiedliche Raumkonzepte innerhalb derselben künstlerischen Arbeit aufeinandertreffen. Welche Eigenschaften und Potenziale sich hieraus ergeben, ist die Frage, welcher der Band nachgeht. Die Beiträge erörtern Raumerfahrungen zwischen An- und Abwesenheit, Selbst- und Weltbezug, zwischen sinnlichem Erleben und gedanklicher Reflexion, zwischen Immersion und Distanzierung. Damit sind sie Ausdruck einer Komplexität, die nicht nur das Verhältnis der Künste untereinander, sondern auch die soziale Lebenswelt auszeichnet, auf die sich die künstlerische Arbeit heutzutage bezieht.

Existing art theory is obsessed by theories of spectatorship based on concepts of signification derived from language. This book shows the weakness of such a perspective, and, as an alternative, argues that individual aesthetic transformations of pictorial structure change one's experience of space. This book traces artists' theories of constructive space in the first half of the twentieth century. Drawing on these concepts and recent theories on space, it develops a methodology termed 'Spatial Art History' that conceives of artworks as physical spatio-temporal things, which produce the social, to overcome the reductive understanding of art as a mere mirror or facilitator of society.
