Abstract

Allan Sekula has devoted his artistic and documentary oeuvre to researching and recording the world of labor and its transformation in the face of the global economy. From early performances enacted as part of the California anti-war movement to his latest work, Black Tide, which documents the Prestige oil tanker disaster on the Gallic coast of Spain, this volume presents a comprehensive overview of Sekula's visual work and texts. In addition to a retrospective look at his artistic and documentary projects, Performance Under Working Conditions will collect Sekula's important theoretical writings on photography, including texts from Photography Against the Grain, now out of print.

Abstract

Abstract

What is the place of Critical Realism today, given the fact that both realism and commitment in art have become highly problematic notions since at least several decades? Realism in the first place appears to be relegated to the museum of pre-modern styles and devices, safely locked-up in the toolbox of 19th-Century art history. Secondly, in our cool, postmodern times, the place for commitment has become highly confuse. The naïve confusion between Critical Realism and notions like Social(ist) Realism or Political Correctness has complexified that situation. The ambition of this volume is to position Critical Realism as clearly as possible in the current art scene. This book makes a strong plea for a critically engaged art, as it can be encountered in a most exemplary way in the work of Allan Sekula. Sekula’s oeuvre features a number of characteristics whose combination makes it unique: his iconography rediscovers and reinvents the theme of labor and his photos, on the verge between art and documentary – thus creating a kind of proto-documentary, reflect on the possibilities for the visual arts today to deliver an ‘act of criticism’. Internationally known as one of the most prominent artists engaged in this debate, Sekula’s research methods allow us to discuss the ways art can be critical about contemporary social questions without succumbing into a plain or overtly partial political statement.

Abstract

Photography's great success gives the impression that the major questions that have haunted the medium are now resolved. On the contrary, the most important questions about photography are just beginning to be asked. These fourteen essays, with over 200 illustrations, critically examine prevailing beliefs about the medium and suggest new ways to explain the history of photography. They are organized around the questions: What are the social consequences of aesthetic practice? How does photography construct sexual difference? How is photography used to promote class and national interests? What are the politics of photographic truth? The Contest of Meaning summarizes the challenges to traditional photographic history that have developed in the last decade out of a consciously political critique of photographic production. Contributions by a wide range of important Americans critics reexamine the complex—and often contradictory—roles of photography within society. Douglas Crimp, Christopher Phillips, Benjamin Buchloh, and Abigail Solomon Godeau examine the gradually developed exclusivity of art photography and describe the politics of canon formation throughout modernism. Catherine Lord, Deborah Bright, Sally Stein, and Jan Zita Grover examine the ways in which the female is configured as a subject, and explain how sexual difference is constructed across various registers of photographic representation. Carol Squiers, Esther Parada, and Richard Bolton clarify the ways in which photography serves as a form of mass communication, demonstrating in particular how photographic production is affected by the interests of the powerful patrons of communications. The three concluding essays, by Rosalind Krauss, Martha Rosler, and Allan Sekula, critically examine the concept of photographic truth by exploring the intentions informing various uses of "objective" images within society.

Abstract

'Art Isn't Fair' is the title of the last video completed in 2012 by Allan Sekula (1951-2013), a work commenting on the rise of art fairs as yet another international gathering of moneyed elites. This new compilation of textual, photographic and filmic essays underscores Sekula's longstanding engagement with the many intersections between art, photography, and the shifting terrain of power struggles from both a local and international perspective. Bringing together an ensemble of works that Sekula never had the chance to publish together before his death in 2013, this new collection expands our sense of the persistent depth and breadth of Sekula's concerns and commitments. The volume includes the widely-cited extended Sekula essay, 'The Body and the Archive' (1986), less well-known but equally comprehensive historical critiques such as 'Photography between Labour and Capital' (1983), the artist's reconsideration of his own early work, plus numerous essays on other artists and photographers from Walker Evans to Robert Mapplethorpe, Susan Meiselas, James Benning and the contemporary Canadian masters of political montage, Carole Condé & Karl Beveridge. The volume concludes with the narrative transcript along with select stills from 'Art Isn't Fair'.

Abstract

Imagine a world in which each individual has a fundamental right to be reborn. This idle dream haunts Hilde Van Gelder's associative travelogue that takes Allan Sekula's sequence Deep Six / Passer au bleu (1996/1998) as a touchstone for a dialogue with more recent artworks zooming in on the borderscape near the Channel Tunnel, such as those by Sylvain George and Bruno Serralongue. Combining ethnography, visual materials, political philosophy, cultural geography, and critical analysis, Ground Sea proceeds through an innovative methodological approach. Inspired by the meandering writings of W.G. Sebald, Javier Marías, and Roland Barthes, Van Gelder develops a style both interdisciplinary and personal. Resolutely opting for an aquatic perspective, Ground Sea offers a powerful meditation on the indifference of an increasingly divided European Union with regard to considerable numbers of persons on the move, who find themselves stranded close to Calais. The contested Strait of Dover becomes a microcosm where our present global challenges of migration, climate change, human rights, and neoliberal surveillance technology converge.
