Abstract

Dimitri Bruni (*1970) and Manuel Krebs (*1970) founded the Zurich based studio NORM in 1999. NORM?s programmatic approach ? suggested by their name ? informed their commissioned works for the cultural field and their self-initiated booklet NORM: Introduction (1999). In 2000, NORM released the early signature font, LL Simple, and another book in 2002, showcasing their highly conceptual approach to graphic design: NORM: The Things. In 2005, they started to work on LL Purple as well as on a corporate typeface for the watch makers Omega in collaboration with Aurèle Sack. In the same year, Ludovic Varone (*1977) joined NORM. Their second signature font, LL Replica, was published in 2008. While designing entire series of publications for artists such as Andro Wekua, Shirana Shahbazi and Peter Fischli & David Weiss, NORM also took over responsibility for the corporate identity of Swatch watches (2010?15) and for signage at the SANAA designed Musée du Louvre-Lens (2010?12). In 2011, they were awarded the Swiss Grand Prix for Design.bron: www.copyrightbookshop.be

Abstract

In visual communication, contents are arranged, organized, and presented. Design laws and principles that are inherent to every medium ensure that from a distance a novel looks like a novel, an art catalog like an art catalog, and a magazine like a magazine. This publication offers a compact mix of explanations, practical tips, and background information on the topic. At its center is the grid as the most important design principle, whose function and application are thoroughly discussed. The grid allows a consolidated approach to a structured design like a blueprint that supports not only faster and easier reading but also better comprehension of information. In a second part, the author discusses the design process itself with answers to seemingly simple questions of what to observe when designing and the sequence of steps. Another chapter focuses on relevant theoretical aspects such as how method and intuition are correlated. The final section contains an extensive glossary.

Abstract

Karl Gerstner's work is a milestone in the history of design. 'Designing Programmes' is one of his most important works: in four essays, the author provides a basic introduction to his design methodology and suggests a model for design in the early days of the computer era. The book is especially topical and exciting in the context of current developments in computational design. With many examples from the worlds of graphic and product design, music, architecture, and art, it inspires the reader to seize on the material, develop it further, and integrate it into his or her own work. 'Designing Programmes' was first published in 1964; in 2007 Lars Müller Publishers launched a re-designed version. This year's release of 'Designing Programmes' is a facsimile of the original edition of the book, designed by Karl Gerstner.
