Eugene Richards est connu pour ses reportages sociaux, en noir et blanc. Agitateur de conscience, il se définit comme « un collecteur d'informations, avec l'espoir que si les informations sont assez pertinentes, elles aident les vrais activistes à faire évoluer les choses. » Exposé à Arles, présent au festival Visa pour l'image de Perpignan en septembre, son travail aura été particulièrement visible cet été. L'occasion de revenir sur un photographe majeur dont le dernier livre, The Blue Room (Phaïdon, 2008), est une vraie surprise. Pour la première fois, ses photographies sont en couleurs. Eugene Richards est un photographe du dévoilement. Reflets, miroirs, voilages, fenêtres, ouvertures sont des éléments rhétoriques courants de son travail. Comme les Jacob Riis, Gordon Parks ou Eugene Smith, il jette une lumière crue sur l'Amérique. Il en bouscule les fables avec application et sans naïveté. Des pauvres de l'ère Reagan (Below the Line, living poor in america, 1987) aux débris du New-York post 11/09 (Stepping Through the Ashes, 2002), des toxicomanes de Brooklyn (Cocaïne blue, cocaïne true, 1994) aux vétérans estropiés d'Irak (National Geographic, 2007 *), il fait le récit sévère de l' "American way of life". Eugene Richards, né en 1944, est le fils d'une famille modeste de Dorchester, dans la banlieue de Boston. En pleine guerre du Vietnam, il bénéficie d'une bourse d'étude en échange de son engagement dans l'armée. Entre 1962 et 1968, il apprend le journalisme à l'université de Boston et suit l'enseignement du photographe Minor White au Massachussetts Institut of Technology. Au moment de payer sa dette aux militaires, il refuse de partir faire la guerre, mais évite la prison en servant dans une association d'aide aux afro-américains de l'Arkansas. Les photographies faites durant ces deux années de service, seront réunies dans son premier livre, Few Comforts or Surprises : The Arkansas Delta (1973). Il s'impose avec son second, Dorchester Days (1978), publié à compte d'auteur, et rejoint Magnum. Ruim zestig fotografen van het fameuze, in 1947 opgerichte fotoagentschap Magnum vertellen over hun loopbaan en de totstandkoming van hun beeldverhalen. Nog levende fotografen doen dat in interviews, overleden collega's staan centraal in achtergrondartikelen. Alle generaties Magnum-fotografen komen aan bod : van de oprichters (o.a. Capa en Cartier-Bresson) tot de jongste lichting. Na hun uitleg over de aanpak en de selectie van het fotomateriaal volgt een zelfgekozen 'fotoverhaal'. De foto's representeren diverse genres in de fotografie en weerspiegelen de eigen kijk die Magnum-fotografen hadden op de historische ontwikkelingen in de 20ste eeuw. De samensteller, die een uitgebreide (Engelstalige) inleiding schreef en alle interviews afnam, was enige tijd Magnum-directeur en is conservator en een bekende publicist. De ongeveer 800 foto's in dit grote, vierkanten boek zijn uitmuntend gedrukt. Met biografietjes van fotografen en een register. Deze uitgave biedt een zeldzaam kijkje in de hogeschool van de fotojournalistiek en laat iedere fotoliefhebber watertanden.
