Esthetics and Biomechanics in Orthodontics, 2nd Edition provides everything you need to know to successfully apply biomechanics in clinical orthodontics. This edition features new content in the areas of tooth movement, treating Class III malocclusions, skeletal anchorage, Surgery First treatment plans, and space closure. In addition to comprehensive guidance on basic biomechanic principles, this state-of-the-art reference also shows how all techniques can apply biomechanical principles to improve the force delivery, understand and prevent side effects, and achieve predictable results. Engineering geology is an interdisciplinary subject concerned with the application of geological science to engineering practice, and it is therefore important for the engineering geologist to recognize the boundary between engineering application and purely scientific enquiry. Much research in applied clay science results from imperfectly understood engineering behaviour. Engineering geology is most closely allied to the geotechnical and materials areas of civil engineering. The scope of the present book is limited to the influence of clay but because clay is almost ubiquitous in earth mat

The mechanics of biological tissues is a multidisciplinary and rapidly expanding area of research. This book highlights some important research directions that combine mechanical sciences with exciting new developments in biology. It includes state-of-the-art articles on: Tissue growth and remodelling – general continuum theories of growth, remodelling and adaptation, with specific applications to arterial, tendon and cartilage growth and to bone healing. Micromechanics, cells and matrix – measurements of the mechanical properties of cells, engineering of cell systems, constitutive and computational modelling of cells and cell-substrate interactions, and the transition from microscopic modelling to its macroscopic consequences. Arteries in health and disease – analysis of residual stress and its development, modelling the constitutive properties of arterial walls, computational analysis of the effect of stenting on the arterial wall, studies of collagen fibre distributions in saccular aneurysms and the interaction between blood flow and aneurysm development. Biological tissues – the musculo-skeletal system, heart valves, ligaments, intervertebral discs, the uterus and vocal fold tissues, with experimental, modelling and computational perspectives. Image-based analysis – illustration of imaging techniques that have great potential for the analysis of tissue properties and pathologies and for guiding the design of engineered tissue constructs. This collection of papers should be of interest to theoretical, computational and experimental researchers and doctoral students in the area of biomechanics and in related areas of engineering, biology and medicine.

This book relates the mechanical and structural properties of bone to its function in man and other vertebrates. John Currey, one of the pioneers of modern bone research, reviews existing information in the field and particularly emphasizes the correlation of the structure of bone with its various uses.Originally published in 1984.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
