Achieving Universal Primary Education (UPE) has received considerable attention since the early 1950s. The concept of universal education is, however, not well defined and is used to mean many different things to different people. This book contains a five-year research work conducted by a group of African and Japanese researchers who have developed an equal partnership and network to review the expansion of primary education, some policies prompting the free primary education intervention, and the challenges of implementation based on the case study of two districts in four countries, namely, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, and Uganda. The first part discusses issues related to administrative, financial, and perceptive issues related to UPE policies in each country case, followed by the second part that focuses on quality of education and UPE policies. The book contains various lessons learnt and implications for future education policies in developing countries.

Este libro es el resultado de una línea de investigación sobre Sociabilidades juveniles y escuela media cuyo propósito es aportar a la comprensión de las tensiones en la convivencia intra e intergeneracional en el ámbito escolar. La perspectiva general del libro plantea una distancia crítica sobre las miradas centradas en las disrupciones, los riesgos, la violencia y el mero espectáculo mediático de las culturas juveniles como escenas neotribales. Estas visiones aportan comprensiones restringidas y apocalípticas de los sujetos jóvenes; ocultan así sus diferentes condiciones de juventud tanto como sus voces y sentidos sobre sus experiencias sociales en los espacios educativos. En camio, a lo largo del escrito se abordan diversidad de prácticas y experiencias relacionadas no sólo con posiciones sociales ligadas al género o la clase sino también con posicionamientos identificatorios situacionales construidos en el escenario de la escuela. Los capítulos que componen el libro son partes de tesis de licenciatura, proyectos doctorales e investigaciones posdoctorales que han profundizado en distintos aspectos de la relación entre jóvenes y escuela. Algunos proyectos se han centrado en el estudio de la sociabilidad juvenil y se orientaron a comprender el interjuego de diferentes lógicas de reconocimiento social que participan en la construcción de identidades en el espacio escolar. Otros se han situado en el nivel de las relaciones intergeneracionales e indagaron las significaciones en torno a la autoridad, las interacciones entre docentes y estudiantes den el aula, analizaron prácticas de reivindicación de derechos o el sentido de la escuela en función de las trayectorias sociales de los jóvenes.

este texto es parte de un estudio denominado Vínculos entre la educación preliminar y la educación superior, y su relación con la deserción/permanencia universitaria, el cual se desarrolló gracias a la participación de estudiantes y profesores de colegios y universidades de la ciudad de Manizales, de quienes se pudieron escuchar múltiples voces, sentires y argumentos acerca de sus experiencias educativas; además de la diversidad de percepciones que acogen sus realidades. Las vinculaciones y desvinculaciones que se evidenciaron en estas expresiones son una base fundamental de este proceso escritural, sin embargo, es la necesidad de habitar lo que se identifica como un eje central de interconexión con la educación y por ende entre los niveles escolares; es por ello que se toma el último capítulo como parte de su análisis, ya que se considera como un elemento que ha estado ausente del proceso formativo, pero que es prioritario para la construcción educativa.

The International Handbook of Student Experience in Elementary and Secondary School is the first handbook of its kind to be published. It brings together in a single volume the groundbreaking work of scholars who have conducted studies of student experiences of school in Afghanistan, Australia, Canada, England, Ghana, Ireland, Pakistan, and the United States. Drawing extensively on students’ interpretations of their experiences in school as expressed in their own words, chapter authors offer insights into how students conceptualize and approach school, how students understand and address the ongoing social opportunities for and challenges in working with other students and teachers, and the multiple ways in which students shape and contribute to school improvement. The individual chapters are framed by an opening chapter, which provides background on, bases of, and trends in research on students’ experiences of school, and a final chapter, which uses the interpretive framework translation provided to explore how researching students’ experiences of school challenges those involved to translate the qualitative research methods they use, the terms they evoke to describe and define students’ experiences of schools, and, in fact, themselves as researchers.
