These first philosophers paved the way for the work of Plato and Aristotle - and hence for the whole of Western thought. This is a unique and invaluable collection of the works of the Presocratics and the Sophists. Waterfield brings together the works of these early thinkers with brilliant new translation and exceptional commentary. This is the ideal anthology for the student of this increasingly appreciated field of classical philosophy. - ;The first philosophers paved the way for the work of Plato and Aristotle - and hence for the whole of Western thought. This work contains an edition and translation of the testimonies on the Presocratic philosopher Melissus of Samos in Antiquity, and a commentary focusing on the history of the way in which he has been interpreted. The aim is to show how he has been understood by ancient writers according to their own agenda and to the knowledge available to them, and to present the main lines of the reception of Melissus throughout Antiquity.

This volume gathers the papers presented at an International Colloquium held in Paris in 2003, and offers new contributions and new interpretative suggestions about both canonical and relatively neglected research areas on Democritus, including ethics, physics and epistemology, as well as musical and literary criticism, technics, zoology, and the catalogue of works. Specific contributions are furthermore devoted to Democritus’ posterity and the problem of sources. The book also offers a detailed bibliography and several indices, which render it an up-to-date and stimulating tool for contemporary research on Democritus and atomism. Essays by: A. Brancacci, L. Gemelli, A. Jaulin, W. Leszl, J. Mansfeld, P.-M. Morel, D. O’Brien, L. Perilli, J. Salem, C.C.W. Taylor, J. Warren.

This book explores the dynamic relationship between myth and philosophy in the Presocratics, the Sophists, and in Plato - a relationship which is found to be more extensive and programmatic than has been recognized. The story of philosophy's relationship with myth is that of its relationship with literary and social convention. The intellectuals studied here wanted to reformulate popular ideas about cultural authority and they achieved this goal by manipulating myth. Their self-conscious use of myth creates a self-reflective philosophic sensibility and draws attention to problems inherent in different modes of linguistic representation. Much of the reception of Greek philosophy stigmatizes myth as 'irrational'. Such an approach ignores the important role played by myth in Greek philosophy, not just as a foil but as a mode of philosophical thought. The case studies in this book reveal myth deployed as a result of methodological reflection, and as a manifestation of philosophical concerns.

"Othmar Keel has become well known as the author of masterly studies on the iconography and texts of the ANE and their relationship to the text of the Hebrew Bible. In this volume, he partners with Silvia Schroer to assemble ANE texts and art that bears on the idea of creation. The result is a convenient assemblage of texts and iconographical data that may be studied in concert, often leading to being able to see old texts in new ways. As with much of this Swiss scholar's work, this new volume will prove to be a resource for all who wish to study the biblical theology of creation against its wider background"--
