Abstract

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to one or more traumatic events. It is a severe and ongoing emotional reaction to extreme psychological trauma, such as threat to life, being a victim of crime or sexual assault, witnessing someone's death, or a threat to one's physical and/or psychological integrity. The new edition updated throughout, presents information in a helpful, practical, and accessible way that will be helpful to survivors, and their family and friends. The book begins with a description of PTSD and other related problems, often experienced by survivors, a short history of the developments in the field, information on common responses to trauma, theory, assessment, treatment and research findings. Further chapters reflect new theoretical thinking and directions in the field of trauma including post-traumatic growth following adversity. New chapters to this edition address the impact of traumatic bereavement, the needs of ex-hostages and their families, and suggestions for self-help after trauma. Post-traumatic stress: The Facts is essential reading for sufferers of post-traumatic stress, their families and friends, and will also be of interest to the general reader and a valuable resource for helping professionals, such as general practitioners, psychologists, social workers, mental health nurses, counsellors and those supporting victims of trauma in the voluntary sector. The book will also be helpful for those in the voluntary and statutory sector responsible for providingcrisis support to those affected by major traumatic events in the community.

The study includes findings from various phases, including measuring PTSD prevalence and testing the TRUST intervention. The research highlights the effectiveness of psycho-social support in enhancing resilience among refugees, compared to traditional social protection methods.

Prostitution, Trafficking, and Traumatic Stress offers the reader an analysis of prostitution and trafficking as organized interpersonal violence. Abstract

Psychic trauma is as old as mankind itself, but it is still not fully understood how or why the exposure to single or multiple horrific events can overwhelm some people to the extent that they are haunted day and night by the terrible things they have witnessed. Most will recover spontaneously, but others become victims of the most common psychological disorder stemming from such an experience: post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is estimated that 8% of the Western population suffer from this disorder, and that 40% of them will continue to suffer from symptoms even ten years after the trigger event. For many years it was believed that there was no remedy for those suffering from severe psychic trauma, but in the last decade a major breakthrough has seen the development of new and effective therapy methods. Regaining a sense of control is key to helping clients suffering from PTSD and its accompanying disorders. The authors of this book have spent many years working in the field. Here they distill those elements common to all the accepted methods of treatment, and they add the unique aspect of imagination and fantasy, described in a concept they call Fantastic Reality. Whilst not claiming to have a remedy or solution for every sufferer, this book will help to provide solutions for some of the aspects lacking in other models. This book will prove a valuable addition to the resources of all those who work in this field, where effective treatment, though much needed, is still scarce.

Abstract

Community-Based Psychological First Aid: A Practical Guide to Helping Individuals and Communities during Difficult Times presents a practical method for helping those in need in difficult times. No advanced training in psychology is needed to use it. Injuries from disasters, terrorist events, and civil unrest are not just physical. These events also cause psychological trauma that can do lasting damage. Psychological First Aid (PFA) draws on human resilience and aims to reduce stress systems and help those affected recover. It is not professional psychotherapy, and those providing this kind of aid do not need a degree to help. Gerard Jacobs has developed this community-based method of delivering PFA over 20 years and has taught it in over 30 countries. Along with the easy-to-follow method, Jacobs includes examples of how this works in action in different situations, and presents scenarios to practice. Unique in its approach of community engagement to train community members to help each other, this guide is an excellent resource for local emergency managers to engage in whole community emergency management.

Abstract

Only one who has been systematically terrified over and over by firefights, deadly ambushes, snipers, booby traps, and rocket and mortar fire can understand the true horror of combat. The resulting terror strikes long-lasting fear in the psyche of a young person. To be exposed over and over, month after month, wounds the soul in ways that lasts a lifetime. Here, Vietnam veterans talk of the long-term consequences of post-traumatic stress disorder brought on by their experiences in combat. Even decades after their initial exposure, they still suffer flashbacks, nightmares, depression, difficult

Abstract

'At last we have a book that provides a comprehensive overview and assessment of the intersubjective turn in psychoanalysis, showing its logical and clinical limitations and exploring its social and cultural determinants. Bohleber emphasizes the clinical importance of real traumatic experience along with the analysis of the transference as he reviews and broadens psychoanalytic theories of memory in relation to advances in cognitive psychology and neuroscience. Psychoanalytic ideas on personality, adolescence and identity are re-thought and updated. Bohleber brilliantly presents a unique under
