Abstract

Improve your circuit-design potential with this expert guide to the devices and technology used in mixed analog-digital VLSI chips for such high-volume applications as hard-disk drives, wireless telephones, and consumer electronics. The book provides you with a critical understanding of device models, fabrication technology, and layout as they apply to mixed analog-digital circuits. You will learn about the many device-modeling requirements for analog work, as well as the pitfalls in models used today for computer simulators such as Spice. Also included is information on fabrication technologies developed specifically for mixed-signal VLSI chips, plus guidance on the layout of mixed analog-digital chips for a high degree of analog-device matching and minimum digital-to-analog interference. This reference book features an intuitive introduction to MOSFET operation that will enable you to view with insight any MOSFET model - besides thorough discussions on valuable large-signal and small-signal models. Filled with practical information, this first-of-its-kind book will help you grasp the nuances of mixed-signal VLSI-device models and layout that are crucial to the design of high-performance chips.

Abstract

Mixed Signal Test Methods Demystified is a less theoretical, less mathematical, and more applications-oriented approach than other books available on the topic. In effect, this book will give readers a ""just in time"" understanding of the essentials of mixed signal testing techniques. Emphasis will be on commonly used devices and systems (such as PLLs and DSP) that engineers encounter in their daily tasks. Sampling theory is covered in detail, as this is the foundation for understanding all mixed signal testing technique, and readers will have a strong intuitive grasp of this topic after fini

Abstract

Adaptive Techniques for Mixed Signal System on Chip discusses the concept of adaptation in the context of analog and mixed signal design along with different adaptive architectures used to control any system parameter. The first part of the book gives an overview of the different elements that are normally used in adaptive designs including tunable elements as well as voltage, current, and time references with an emphasis on the circuit design of specific blocks such as voltage-controlled transconductors, offset comparators, and a novel technique for accurate implementation of on chip resistors. While the first part of the book addresses adaptive techniques at the circuit and block levels, the second part discusses adaptive equalization architectures employed to minimize the impact of ISI (Intersymbol Interference) on the quality of received data in high-speed wire line transceivers. It presents the implementation of a 125Mbps transceiver operating over a variable length of Category 5 (CAT-5) Ethernet cable as an example of adaptive equalizers.

Abstract

Oscillation-Based Test in Mixed-Signal Circuits presents the development and experimental validation of the structural test strategy called Oscillation-Based Test – OBT in short. The results here presented allow to assert, not only from a theoretical point of view, but also based on a wide experimental support, that OBT is an efficient defect-oriented test solution, complementing the existing functional test techniques for mixed-signal circuits.

Abstract

Since scaling of CMOS is reaching the nanometer area serious limitations enforce the introduction of novel materials, device architectures and device concepts. Multi-gate devices employing high-k gate dielectrics are considered as promising solution overcoming these scaling limitations of conventional planar bulk CMOS. Variation Aware Analog and Mixed-Signal Circuit Design in Emerging Multi-Gate CMOS Technologies provides a technology oriented assessment of analog and mixed-signal circuits in emerging high-k and multi-gate CMOS technologies. Closing the gap from technology to design a detailed insight into circuit performance trade-offs related to multi-gate and high-k device specifics is provided. The new effect of transient threshold voltage variations is described with an equivalent model that allows a systematic assessment of the consequences on circuit level and the development of countermeasures to compensate for performance degradation in comparators and A/D converters. Key analog, mixed-signal and RF building blocks are realized in high-k multi-gate technology and benchmarked against planar bulk. Performance and area benefits, enabled by advantageous multi-gate device properties are analytically and experimentally quantified for reference circuits, operational amplifiers and D/A converters. This is based on first time silicon investigations of complex mixed-signal building blocks as D/A converter and PLL with multi-gate devices. As another first, the integration of tunnel transistors in a multi-gate process is described, enabling devices with promising scaling and analog properties. Based on these devices a novel reference circuit is proposed which features low power consumption.

Abstract

Mixed-Signal Layout Generation Concepts covers important physical-design issues that exist in contemporary analog and mixed-signal design flows. Due to the increasing pressure on time-to-market, the steep increase in chip fabrication costs, and the increasing design complexity, it becomes even more challenging to produce a first-time right IC layout. The fundamental issues in creating a layout are placement and routing. Although these coupled problems have been investigated for many decades, no satisfactory automated solution has emerged yet. Fortunately, supported by modern computing power and results of new research that further improve computation efficiency, significant steps forward have been taken.
