Die Untersuchung bestimmt den zweideutigen Standort, den Goethe im breit gefächerten Spektrum der Subjektdiskurse einnimmt, anhand einer bemerkenswerten Problemkontinuität im Erzählwerk des Dichters. Sie verschränkt poetologische mit ideengeschichtlichen Untersuchungsdimensionen und legt Goethes immer Zweifel am Individuum als einem Ort der Kohärenz- und Sinnstiftung offen. This study treats a central complex of issues which have hitherto received little attention from Goethe scholars, namely the question of the conception and position of the subject in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's novels and shorter narrative pieces. In his study the author combines approaches from the history of ideas and poetology in a systematic way and succeeds in demonstrating that the question of the ego, its identity and boundaries is a recurring problem in Goethe's writings, and one that he obviously did not succeed in resolving; at the same time he shows that Goethe's figures, with their internal breaks, already display clear features of the modern subject.

Poets, painters, philosophers, and scientists alike debated new ways of thinking about visual culture in the “long eighteenth century”. The essays in The Enlightened Eye: Goethe and Visual Culture demonstrate the extent to which Goethe advanced this discourse in virtually all disciplines. The concept of visuality becomes a constitutive moment in a productive relationship between the verbal and visual arts with far-reaching implications for the formation of bourgeois identity, pedagogy, and culture. From a variety of theoretical perspectives, the contributors to this volume examine the interconnections between aesthetic and scientific fields of inquiry involved in Goethe’s visual identity. By locating Goethe’s position in the examination of visual culture, both established and emerging scholars analyze the degree to which visual aesthetics determined the cultural production of both the German-speaking world and the broader European context. The contributions analyze the production, presentation, and consumption of visual culture defined broadly as painting, sculpture, theater, and scientific practice. The Enlightened Eye promises to invest new energy and insight into the discussion among literary scholars, art historians, and cultural theorists about many aspects of visual culture in the Age of Goethe.

"In this incisive, original book, S. Williams reads prefaces to German literature and philosophy around 1800 as pretexts for writing, examining three of the most remarkable preface-writers of that era--Goethe, Jean Paul, and Hegel--in the contexts not only of German, but also European print culture, thought, and literature"-- "Around 1800, print culture became a particularly rich source for metaphors about thinking as well as writing, nowhere more so than in the German tradition of Dichter und Denker. Goethe, Jean Paul, and Hegel (among many others) used the preface in order to reflect on the problems of writing itself, and its interpretation. If Sterne teaches us that a material book enables mind games as much as it gives expression to them, the Germans made these games more theoretical still. Weaving in authors from Antiquity to Agamben, Williams shows how European-and, above all, German-Romanticism was a watershed in the history of the preface. The playful, paradoxical strategies that Romantic writers invented are later played out in continental philosophy, and in post-Structuralist literature. The preface is a prompt for playful thinking with texts, as much as it is conventionally the prosaic product of such an exercise"--
