Abstract

"Human trafficking for the sex trade is a form of modern day slavery that ensnares thousands of victims each year around the globe. Women and girls make up the majority of victims of sex trafficking, and Heather Smith-Cannoy, Patricia C. Rodda, and Charles Anthony Smith focus their analysis on the complex conditions that lead to trafficking of women and girls and the varied state responses to it. The authors analyze sex trafficking in five countries: India, Thailand, Russia, Nigeria, and Brazil. This book furthers our understanding of sex trafficking by bringing to the forefront the cultural, political, and economic status of women in society. The authors' research demonstrates that state responsiveness to human trafficking is shaped by the rights afforded to women in these societies. While combatting human trafficking is a multi-scalar problem with a host of conflating variables, a common theme in the effectiveness of state responses is the degree to which women and girls are perceived as, and actually are, full citizens. The authors demonstrate that the objectification, commodification, and structural and cultural oppression of women and girls enables states to ignore or minimally address human trafficking"--

Abstract

An autobiography of Miss Wish is a tale about two lives intertwined, subject and photographer, working collaboratively to create a uniquely enigmatic book, which pushes the boundaries of documentary storytelling. It is a haunting, dark story of a survivor of sex trafficking and child pornography and her struggle to survive and find physical and emotional safety, to assert herself as an artist and narrator, and to craft a life while living in a state of flashbacks, trauma and addiction. Photographed over 25 years in London and then New York City where Miss Wish fled on the advice of Scotland Yard, the story is told through multiple narrative elements including the protagonist's vast personal archive which was safeguarded by the photographer who assumed the role of friend and advocate. The resulting book weaves together this archive of harrowing drawings depicting crime scenes and flashbacks, hospital psychiatric reports, diary entries, personal ephemera and letters and text messages between photographer and protagonist.

Abstract

While distinguished academies of higher learning, governments, politicians, and the media struggle to find solutions to the imminent dangers posed to the Middle East and the world at large, a devastating human rights war has unfolded, with precious few warriors to combat it, let alone stem the brutal injustice that is of holocaust dimensions. If there is any scourge that puts Civilization at Risk, it is the malignant disregard for the human rights of millions of people, who suffer slavery an...

Abstract

Control and Protect explores the meaning and significance of efforts designed to combat sex trafficking in the United States. A striking case study of the new ways in which law enforcement agents, social service providers, and nongovernmental advocates have joined forces in this campaign, this book reveals how these collaborations consolidate state power and carceral control. This book examines how partnerships forged in the name of fighting domestic sex trafficking have blurred the boundaries between punishment and protection, victim and offender, and state and nonstate authority.

Abstract

"This book deals with social protection programmes targeted to people trafficked for the scope of sexual exploitation. It provides empirical evidence on the N.A.Ve programme, in the north-eastern Italian Veneto Region, and its evolution. It elaborates on the programme by narrating the subjective experiences of practitioners and of a specific group of beneficiaries: young Nigerian women - some in transition towards the majority age. The book builds on qualitative research, including a long institutional ethnographic research and semi-structured interviews carried out in the period 2019-2021, before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. It takes an intersectional, social work and humanitarian governance perspective to examine the multiple dimensions of vulnerability (age, gender, geographical origin, type of exploitation) characterising trafficked and sexually exploited Nigerian women. It draws attention to the precariousness of protection trajectories, but also on the agency of these women, by building on the autonomy of migration approach, while shedding light on the temporal tensions between biographical and institutional times. Calling for greater space for women's voices and for their involvement in the co-development of protection programmes, this book will appeal to scholars of sociology, anthropology, social work and politics, as well as to practitioners and policymakers interested in migration and trafficking"--

Abstract

While the trafficking of women for prostitution has been the subject of numerous studies, Prostitution and Human Trafficking is the first book to focus on demand as a key factor in the equation. In order to do this, the editors adopted a double approach: on the one hand, a "virtual ethnography" was developed that focused on the analysis of specialized forums on the web and that used an anonymous internet questionnaire as interview method. On the other, fieldwork allowed national research teams to collect interviews and data from likely clients of trafficked prostitutes, prostitutes themselves, from police officers involved and from national experts. Who is the client of trafficked prostitution? What fuels the demand for trafficked prostitution as opposed to other forms? Which are the most effective policies for what type of prostitution? The research in this book aims to answer these questions with an innovative approach. The editors have explored the hidden world of human trafficking for prostitution and profiled its clients. In doing so, they have refuted some common stereotypes about clients while inspiring the elaboration of balanced guidelines for managing prostitution, protecting the victims and thus tackling its undesired trafficking component. Prostitution and Human Trafficking is highly recommended for researchers in the fields of criminology, sociology and law as well as for the law enforcement and legal communities. The book is also recommended for organizations and policymakers involved in fighting organized crime in general and human trafficking in particular.
