Abstract

In Spectral Properties of Certain Operators on a Free Hilbert Space and the Semicircular Law, the authors consider the so-called free Hilbert spaces, which are the Hilbert spaces induced by the usual l2 Hilbert spaces and operators acting on them. The construction of these operators itself is interesting and provides new types of Hilbert-space operators. Also, by considering spectral-theoretic properties of these operators, the authors illustrate how “free-Hilbert-space” Operator Theory is different from the classical Operator Theory. More interestingly, the authors demonstrate how such operators affect the semicircular law induced by the ONB-vectors of a fixed free Hilbert space. Different from the usual approaches, this book shows how “inside” actions of operator algebra deform the free-probabilistic information—in particular, the semicircular law.

Abstract

The Hilbert transform has many uses, including solving problems in aerodynamics, condensed matter physics, optics, fluids, and engineering. Written in a style that will suit a wide audience (including the physical sciences), this book will become the reference of choice on the topic, whatever the subject background of the reader. It explains all the common Hilbert transforms, mathematical techniques for evaluating them, and has detailed discussions of their application. Especially useful for researchers are the tabulation of analytically evaluated Hilbert transforms, and an atlas that immediately illustrates how the Hilbert transform alters a function. A collection of exercises helps the reader to test their understanding of the material in each chapter. The bibliography is a wide-ranging collection of references both to the classical mathematical papers, and to a diverse array of applications.

Abstract

Building on the success of the two previous editions, Introduction to Hilbert Spaces with Applications, 3E, offers an overview of the basic ideas and results of Hilbert space theory and functional analysis. It acquaints students with the Lebesgue integral, and includes an enhanced presentation of results and proofs. Students and researchers will benefit from the wealth of revised examples in new, diverse applications as they apply to optimization, variational and control problems, and problems in approximation theory, nonlinear instability, and bifurcation. The text also includes a popular cha

Abstract

This book is written for scientists and engineers who use HHT (Hilbert-Huang Transform) to analyze data from nonlinear and non-stationary processes. It can be treated as a HHT user manual and a source of reference for HHT applications. The book contains the basic principle and method of HHT and various application examples, ranging from the correction of satellite orbit drifting to detection of failure of highway bridges. The thirteen chapters of the first edition are based on the presentations made at a mini-symposium at the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics in 2003. Some outstan

Abstract

"One of the major unsolved problems in operator theory is the fifty-year-old invariant subspace problem, which asks whether every bounded linear operator on a Hilbert space has a nontrivial closed invariant subspace. This book presents some of the major results in the area, including many that were derived within the past few years and cannot be found in other books. Beginning with a preliminary chapter containing the necessary pure mathematical background, the authors present a variety of powerful techniques, including the use of the operator-valued Poisson kernel, various forms of the functional calculus, Hardy spaces, fixed point theorems, minimal vectors, universal operators and moment sequences. The subject is presented at a level accessible to postgraduate students, as well as established researchers. It will be of particular interest to those who study linear operators and also to those who work in other areas of pure mathematics"--

Abstract

Numerical simulation of compressible, inviscid time-dependent flow is a major branch of computational fluid dynamics. Its primary goal is to obtain accurate representation of the time evolution of complex flow patterns, involving interactions of shocks, interfaces, and rarefaction waves. The Generalized Riemann Problem (GRP) algorithm, developed by the authors for this purpose, provides a unifying 'shell' which comprises some of the most commonly used numerical schemes of this process. This 2003 monograph gives a systematic presentation of the GRP methodology, starting from the underlying mathematical principles, through basic scheme analysis and scheme extensions (such as reacting flow or two-dimensional flows involving moving or stationary boundaries). An array of instructive examples illustrates the range of applications, extending from (simple) scalar equations to computational fluid dynamics. Background material from mathematical analysis and fluid dynamics is provided, making the book accessible to both researchers and graduate students of applied mathematics, science and engineering.

Abstract

Most scholars think of David Hilbert's program as the most demanding and ideologically motivated attempt to provide a foundation for mathematics, and because they see technical obstacles in the way of realizing the program's goals, they regard it as a failure. Against this view, Curtis Franks argues that Hilbert's deepest and most central insight was that mathematical techniques and practices do not need grounding in any philosophical principles. He weaves together an original historical account, philosophical analysis, and his own development of the meta-mathematics of weak systems of arithmetic to show that the true philosophical significance of Hilbert's program is that it makes the autonomy of mathematics evident. The result is a vision of the early history of modern logic that highlights the rich interaction between its conceptual problems and technical development.

Abstract

David Hilbert was one of the great mathematicians who expounded the centrality of their subject in human thought. In this collection of essays, Wilfried Sieg frames Hilbert's foundational work, from 1890 to 1939, in a comprehensive way and integrates it with modern proof theoretic investigations. Ten essays are devoted to the analysis of classical as well as modern proof theory; three papers on the mathematical roots of Hilbert's work precede the analytical core, and three final essays exploit an open philosophical horizon for reflection on the nature of mathematics in the 21st century.

Abstract

The Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) represents a desperate attempt to break the suffocating hold on the field of data analysis by the twin assumptions of linearity and stationarity. Unlike spectrograms, wavelet analysis, or the Wigner-Ville Distribution, HHT is truly a time-frequency analysis, but it does not require an a priori functional basis and, therefore, the convolution computation of frequency. The method provides a magnifying glass to examine the data, and also offers a different view of data from nonlinear processes, with the results no longer shackled by spurious harmonics - the artif
