A compendious overview of the revered and subversive queer Canadian collectivePublished on the occasion of the huge retrospective General Idea at the National Gallery of Canada, Ontario, and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2022?2023), this volume constitutes the most comprehensive source on the Canadian collective General Idea, founded in Toronto in 1969 by Felix Partz, Jorge Zontal, and AA Bronson, and active until the death of Partz and Zontal in 1994.The volume is arranged in three parts: I. Performances and Actions; II. In the Streets; III. In the Showroom. The first two parts focus on works and methods that extend beyond the traditional museum exhibition, documenting ephemeral, time-based, and even disposable works. The third part includes a plates section offering a near-complete visual survey of General Idea?s practice. Facing-page comparative images show works as they appeared in historical installations and other relevant contexts. These three sections correspond broadly to the collective?s development: from performances, actions, pageants, and other practices (1969?1978), through works engaging with mass media formats such as the magazine, broadcast television, and video (1972?1980s), moving finally to works conceived for galleries and museums (1985?1994).bron : https://jrp-editions.com/art/books/monographs-artists-books/general-idea/

Over the past two decades, geopolitical borders have shifted and new technologies have forged channels of communication around the world. The Western art world has become part of a much broader field, opening itself to new continents and allowing for a significant crosspollination of post-Conceptual strategies and vernacular modes. Printed materials, in both innovative and traditional forms, have played a key role in the exchange of ideas and sources. Print/Out, published in conjunction with an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, examines the evolution of artistic practices related to printmaking, from a recent resurgence of traditional printing techniques — often used alongside digital technologies — to the proliferation of self-published artists' projects. Print/Out features focused sections on ten artists and publishers — Ai Weiwei, Ellen Gallagher, Martin Kippenberger, Lucy McKenzie, Aleksandra Mir, museum in progress, Edition Jacob Samuel, SUPERFLEX, Robert Rauschenberg, and Rirkrit Tiravanija — as well as rich illustrations of printed projects from the last twenty years by major artists such as Trisha Donnelly, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Thomas Schütte, and Kelley Walker.

Discussions of the object as a key to understanding central aspects of modern and contemporary art. Artists increasingly refer to “post-object-based” work while theorists engage with material artifacts in culture. A focus on “object-based” learning treats objects as vectors for dialogue across disciplines. Virtual imaging enables the object to be abstracted or circumvented, while immaterial forms of labor challenge materialist theories. This anthology surveys such reappraisals of what constitutes the “objectness” of production, with art as its focus. Among the topics it examines are the relation of the object to subjectivity; distinctions between objects and things; the significance of the object's transition from inert mass to tool or artifact; and the meanings of the everyday in the found object, repetition in the replicated or multiple object, loss in the absent object, and abjection in the formless or degraded object. It also explores artistic positions that are anti-object; theories of the experimental, liminal or mental object; and the role of objects in performance. The object becomes a prism through which to reread contemporary art and better understand its recent past.

"Video is everywhere. Since its debut as a consumer medium in the 1960s, video has shaped our opinions, our politics and our societies. On our phones and computer screens, walls and streets, it defines new spaces and experiences--spreading memes, lies, fervor, fact and fiction. In other words, video has transformed the world. Featuring works from the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, this illuminating exhibition catalog--MoMA's first major publication on video art in nearly 30 years--explores the ways in which artists have both championed and questioned video's promise, some hoping to create new networks of communication, democratic engagement and public participation, others protesting commercial and state control over information, vision and truth itself. Lavishly illustrated essays by esteemed scholars and artists--including Ina Blom, Aria Dean, David Joselit, Pamela M. Lee, Glenn Ligon and Ravi Sundaram--highlight video's widely varied formats, contexts and global reach. Signals is a manual for understanding the present, an era in which video has pervaded all aspects of life"--
