In the eighth and ninth centuries, the papacy had to deal with with a multitude of ‘others’ aunder variing circumstances. This book researches three cases that have had a considerable impact on the papacy: the representation of the Byzantine or ‘Greek’ empire and the communication with and about the Lombards and the Franks, both in the eighth century, as well as the conflict with Muslim groups called Saracens in the ninth century. Jahrhundert.

Traditional scholarship on post-Roman western culture has tended to examine the ethnic identities of Goths, Franks, and similar groups while neglecting the Romans themselves, in part because modern scholars have viewed the concept of being Roman as one denoting primarily a cultural or legal affiliation. As this book demonstrates, however, early medieval 'Romanness' also encompassed a sense of belonging to an ethnic group, which allowed Romans in Iberia and Gaul to adopt Gothic or Frankish identities in a more nuanced manner than has been previously acknowledged in the literature.

One of the most striking features of late medieval and early modern German was the countless feuds carried out by nobles. A constant threat to law and order, these feuds have commonly been regarded as a manifestation of the decline - economic and otherwise - of the nobility. This study shows that the nobility was not in crisis at this time. Nor were feuds merely banditry by another name. Rather, they were the result of an interplay between two fundamental processes: princely state-building, and social stratification among the nobility. Offering a new paradigm for understanding the German nobility, this book argues that the development of the state made proximity to princes the single most decisive factor in determining the fortune of a family. The result was a violent competition among the nobility over resources which were crucial to the princes. Feuds played a central role in this struggle that eventually led to the formation of an elite of noble families on whose power and wealth the princely state depended.

The book Eliezer-Zusman of Brody: The Early Modern Synagogue Painter and His World discusses the Jewish cultural and artistic migration from Eastern Europe to German lands in the first half of the eighteenth century. Its case study is the synagogue painter Eliezer-Zusman of Brody, who painted several synagogues in the Franconia area, today in southern Germany. By choosing this case study, the book highlights hitherto neglected aspects of the life and work methods of religious artisans in Eastern and Central Europe in the early modern period. The focus on synagogue paintings in Franconia presents an unexpected intensive scene of synagogue painters in the periphery of Jewish Ashkenazi existence.
