Abstract

Seeing is believing. This is the title of a new campaign promoted by the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness to raise funds to help tackle avoidable loss of sight in poorly developed countries, truly an admirable initiative. This book could have used a similar leitmotiv: if you see what happens inside of a joint, you will be able to believe in your patient’s symptoms. But it would not be right. Arthroscopy is not out there just to make a diagnosis; it was not developed just to certify that the patient’s complaints are based on something physical. Arthroscopy was introduced to help patients, to make our treatments more reliable, to have better control of our procedures. It is merely a tool, indeed, but a marvelous one which nobody should und- score among all surgical options we have when it comes to solving wrist trauma. Seeing is understanding. This could be another leitmotiv for these authors’ campaign to get more hand surgeons to incorporate arthroscopy in their practices. Certainly, mastering these newly developed techniques help understanding the patient’s problems. But again, that statement would also be misleading for not always what we see through the scope is the real cause of dysfunction. The enemy may be outside of the capsular enclosure. Indeed, arthroscopy provides lots of useful information, but the surgeon need not accept biased interpretations of the patient’s problem based only on what appears on the screen.

Abstract

Osteoporosis is one of the ten most important diseases worldwide and its importance will rise further f- lowing the aging of the population. Vertebral fractures are the most common fractures in osteoporosis and have signi?cant impact on quality of life and survival rates, as well as carrying increased socioeconomic costs. The establishment of minimally invasive treatment schemes in recent years has led to reduced peri- erative morbidity and increased early mobilization. This book focuses on balloon kyphoplasty and alter- tive minimally invasive treatments for stabilization of osteoporotic vertebral fractures. The optimal treatment of a patient with osteoporotic vertebral fractures requires an interdisciplinary - proach, and therefore our book draws on the expertise of orthopedic surgeons, traumatologists and neu- surgeons, and also includes a chapter on medical treatment. We are happy to present the ?rst English edition of this book. All chapters have been extensively revised and updated. In addition to a detailed description of the technique of balloon kyphoplasty, with practical tips from experts, the book retains a chapter on the medical treatment of osteoporosis, which is still ind- pensable in the interdisciplinary approach to osteoporosis. This well established concept, uniting several treatment aspects including conservative treatment, is preserved in this book. However, new chapters have been added as the result of recent developments and clinical ?ndings.

Abstract

Over the past three decades, the flexible intramedullary nailing (FIN) technique that originated in the University of Nancy in France has evolved to the point where it is becoming the gold standard for the treatment of many fractures in children. Most orthopedic surgeons and traumatologists now use the method to treat femoral fractures in children, and various investigators have expanded the method so that it is applicable to tibial and forearm fractures as well. Despite this, full descriptions of FIN’s potential are still lacking in the literature, and many surgeons remain unfamiliar with the original technique as developed in Nancy. This comprehensive textbook on FIN is written by Pierre Lascombes and his colleagues from the University of Nancy and covers all potential applications of the technique. The book is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on general considerations such as biomechanics, choice of implant, basic principles of surgical technique, and rehabilitation. The second part describes in detail the techniques developed for each particular fracture type with the aid of numerous high-quality illustrations. In the final part, a range of further indications for FIN in children are discussed. By clearly explaining the basic principles and techniques of intramedullary fixation with flexible nails, this book will prove of value to both novice and experienced traumatologists and orthopedic surgeons.
