Were it simply a collection of fascinating, previously unpublished folktales, Speak, Bird, Speak Again: Palestinian Arab Folktales would merit praise and attention because of its cultural rather than political approach to Palestinian studies. But it is much more than this. By combining their respective expertise in English literature and anthropology, Ibrahim Muhawi and Sharif Kanaana bring to these tales an integral method of study that unites a sensitivity to language with a deep appreciation for culture. As native Palestinians, the authors are well-suited to their task. Over the course of several years they collected tales in the regions of the Galilee, Gaza, and the West Bank, determining which were the most widely known and appreciated and selecting the ones that best represented the Palestinian Arab folk narrative tradition. Great care has been taken with the translations to maintain the original flavor, humor, and cultural nuances of tales that are at once earthy and whimsical. The authors have also provided footnotes, an international typology, a comprehensive motif index, and a thorough analytic guide to parallel tales in the larger Arab tradition in folk narrative. Cette étude tente d’analyser les stratégies narratives d’un manuscrit de conteur de la recension damascène de Sīrat al-Malik al-Ẓāhir Baybarṣ, et d’en déterminer les spécificités. En effet, si le genre sīra peut, comme tout récit, se ramener à une grammaire que partage l’ensemble des siyar, chaque recension peut également proposer des stratégies narratives qui lui sont propres. Au-delà des invariants, ce sont donc les variants et leur utilisation particulière qui constituent la spécificité de la recension de Damas. Des concepts fondamentaux du genre, comme la structure par épisodes, la répétition, le style formulaire, le double et la substitution sont mis en œuvre dans des stratégies spécifiques qui dépendent de choix essentiels dans le récit, comme, par exemple, un dévoilement permanent qui ne laisse que peu de place au suspense. L’annexe comprend un résumé en français de l’intégralité de la Sīra, ainsi que plusieurs listes de personnages et un ensemble de données permettant au lecteur de replacer dans leur contexte les épisodes étudiés.

This book is a literary, intertextual study of an Egyptian popular epic. In this innovative study, Helen Blatherwick investigates how various sources, including Islamic qiṣaṣ al-anbiyāʾ (‘tales of the prophets’), Pharaonic, Graeco-Roman and Coptic Egyptian myths and narratives, and recensions of the Alexander Romance function as intertexts within Sīrat Sayf . Blatherwick argues that these intertexts are deployed as narrative devices which are readily recognisable to the story's audience, and that they are significant carriers of meaning and theme. Crucially, these intertexts also interact within Sīrat Sayf to bring a conceptual continuity to its discussion of kingship and society that stretches from this late-medieval epic back to ancient Egyptian narratives.
