This book comprises five chapters on developed research activities on organic Rankine cycles. The first section aims to provide researchers with proper modelling (Chapter 1) and experimental (Chapter 2) tools to calculate and empirically validate thermophysical properties of ORC working fluids. The second section introduces some theoretical and experimental studies of organic Rankine cycles for waste heat recovery applications: a review of different supercritical ORC (Chapter 3), ORC for waste heat recovery from fossil-fired power plants (Chapter 4), the experimental detailed characterization of a small-scale ORC of 3 kW operating with either pure fluids or mixtures (Chapter 5).

Business cycle theory has been one of the fastest growing fields in modern nonlinear economic dynamics. The book is centered around models of multiplier-accelerator type, emerging from Samuelson's seminal work, later developed into nonlinear formats by Hicks and Goodwin. These models left open ends, as the tools then available did not permit more systematic analysis. The present situation is different, due to the emergence of new methods also focusing global analysis. The focus on classical, causal or recursive models implies a deviation from current main stream business cycle theory, based on "rational expectations", which in view of the possibility of mathematical chaos becomes untenable. This book is a rejoinder to Puu and Sushko, Oligopoly Dynamics - Models and Tools, (Springer 2002).

Precious metals continue to have economic and sociocultural importance, as their usage evolves and diversifies over time. Today, the industrial application of precious metals is increasing with the development of scientific and technological innovations. Especially, the biological cycling of these metals is receiving more and more attention, as the microbiota may be key to a range of issues regarding exploration, ore-processing and metallurgy, and the processing of electron waste. In this volume, we focus on enhancing the fundamental understanding of the biological processes that drive noble metal cycling and examine how this knowledge may be turned into biotechnolical applications.

This is a collection of lecture notes from the Summer School 'Cycles Algébriques; Aspects Transcendents, Grenoble 2001'. The topics range from introductory lectures on algebraic cycles to more advanced material. The advanced lectures are grouped under three headings: Lawson (co)homology, motives and motivic cohomology and Hodge theoretic invariants of cycles. Among the topics treated are: cycle spaces, Chow topology, morphic cohomology, Grothendieck motives, Chow-Künneth decompositions of the diagonal, motivic cohomology via higher Chow groups, the Hodge conjecture for certain fourfolds, an effective version of Nori's connectivity theorem, Beilinson's Hodge and Tate conjecture for open complete intersections. As the lectures were intended for non-specialists many examples have been included to illustrate the theory. As such this book will be ideal for graduate students or researchers seeking a modern introduction to the state-of-the-art theory in this subject.

Fungi play important roles in the cycling of elements in the biosphere but are frequently neglected within microbiological and geochemical research spheres. Symbiotic mycorrhizal fungi are responsible for major transformations and redistribution of inorganic nutrients, while free-living fungi have major roles in the decomposition of organic materials, including xenobiotics. Fungi are also major biodeterioration agents of stone, wood, plaster, cement and other building materials, and are important components of rock-inhabiting microbial communities. The aim of this 2006 book is to promote further understanding of the key roles that free-living and symbiotic fungi (in mycorrhizas and lichens) play in the biogeochemical cycling of elements, the chemical and biological mechanisms that are involved, and their environmental and biotechnological significance. Where appropriate, relationships with bacteria are also discussed to highlight the dynamic interactions that can exist between these major microbial groups and their integrated function in several kinds of habitat.

This book is a collection of theoretical and empirical contributions on the new forms of economic cycles, particularly focusing on business cycle theory post-World War II. Edited by Alfred E. Ott, it gathers thoughts from various economists including Heinz Holländer, Henner Kleinewefers, Jürgen Kromphardt, Hans-Jürgen Krupp, and others. The aim is to describe and analyze the fluctuations in economic activity, distinguishing them from classical cycles, such as those identified by Juglar. The contributors discuss the challenges of developing a comprehensive theory of these cycles due to their novel characteristics. The book is intended for economists and scholars interested in economic theory, particularly those focusing on macroeconomic fluctuations and business cycles. It provides insights into the empirical and theoretical considerations that have emerged since the publication of Hicks' work in 1950, offering an overview of the ongoing debates and methodological approaches in the field.
