In Cultuurgeschiedenis.

Studies in Romanticism is the flagship journal in its field, a quarterly with international circulation, publishing articles representing the full range of disciplines within the Romantic period. It was founded in 1961 by David Bonnell Green. SiR (as it is known to abbreviation) has flourished under a fine succession of editors: Edwin Silverman, W. H. Stevenson, Charles Stone III, Michael Cooke, Morton Paley, and (continuously since 1978) David Wagenknecht. Since 1976, SiR has regularly published thematically-controlled "special issues," as well as miscellanies. Sometimes issues have been devoted to geographical or national kinds (e.g. German Romanticism, Scottish Romanticism), or to authors, even to particular works ("Sardanapalus"), or to gifted scholars (e.g. "Homage to David Erdman") or to special approaches (Paul de Man's "The Rhetoric of Romanticism"), and in every instance SiR has reached out, beyond eminences, to new scholars who demonstrate invention as well as rigor.

Debating civilisations offers an up-to-date evaluation of the re-emerging field of civilisational analysis, tracing its main currents and comparing it to rival paradigms such as Marxism, globalisation theory and postcolonial sociology. The book suggests that civilisational analysis offers an alternative approach to understanding globalisation, one that focuses on the dense engagement of societies, cultures, empires and civilisations in human history. Building on Castoriadis’s theory of social imaginaries, it argues that civilisations are best understood as the products of routine contacts and connections carried out by anonymous actors over the course of long periods of time. It illustrates this argument through case studies of modern Japan, the Pacific and post-Conquest Latin America (including the revival of indigenous civilisations), exploring discourses of civilisation outside the West within the context of growing Western imperial power.

The articles included in this Yearbook of the Sociology of Islam are focused on two perspectives: Some link the comparative analysis of Islam to ongoing debates on the Axial Age and its role in the formation of major civilizational complexes, while others are more concerned with the historical constellations and sources involved in the formation of Islam as a religion and a civilization. More than any other particular line of inquiry, new historical and sociological approaches to the Axial Age revived the idea of comparative civilizational analysis and channeled it into more specific projects. A closer look at the very problematic place of Islam in this context will help to clarify questions about the Axial version of civilizational theory as well as issues in Islamic studies and sociological approaches to modern Islam. Contributors among others: Said Arjomand, Shmuel N. Eisenstadt, Josef van Ess and Raif G. Khoury.

Unlike works inherited from Greek or Roman Antiquity, no text of Mesopotamian civilization has come down to us directly. The Onsriologist works from texts inscribed in cuneiform characters on clay tablets. He must reconstitute the texts from fragments, put them in chronological and geographical order to gradually develop a history not only political, but also social, economic and cultural of Mesopotamia. The task is immense and involves a multidisciplinary approach combining archeology and epigraphy, philology and history.
