The influence of Cicero is everywhere to be found. His rhetorical and philosophical writings have made an inescapable impact on the history of western culture, impressing figures such as Augustine, Jerome, Petrarch, Erasmus, Martin Luther, John Locke, David Hume, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Despite his wide appeal, until now no study has yet offered a comprehensive overview of 'Cicero' as a character in stage plays in the early modern and modern periods.The first book of its kind to discuss Cicero's reception on stage, it includes works by Ben Jonson (1611, Catiline His Conspiracy), Voltaire (1752, Rome sauvée, ou Catilina), Richard Cumberland (1761, The Banishment of Cicero), Henry Bliss (1847, Cicero, A drama) and, most recently, Mike Poulton (Imperium, adapted from the novels of Robert Harris in 2017). Through a chapter-by-chapter account of each play in turn, every oeuvre is placed in its historical and cultural context; the plots are discussed in relation to the ancient sources. These analyses demonstrate how the presentation and assessment of the figure of Cicero develop over time and how this character is exploited for varying political statements. The wealth of material in this book is vital reading for scholars of Classics, drama and literary studies as well as historians of ideas and of the early modern age.

The book brings together seven essays on Cicero written by specialists in the Author. The essays are grouped into two sections: the first one presents papers on Cicero’s works (the dialogues: Lucullus, De finibus, De oratore, De officiis); the papers in the second one discuss on both the early and late reception of Cicero (in Seneca, Petrarch and Erasmus). The authors are professors from Brazilian (Adriano Scatolin, Bianca Fanelli Morganti, Elaine Cristine Sartorelli, Sidney Calheiros de Lima), French (Carlos Lévy) and Italian universities (Aldo Setaioli, Ermanno Malaspina). The book avoids traditional biographical approach, which tends to take the works of Cicero as a reliable witness of political and family events, sometimes distrusts them as a distorted picture of public and private actors. The essays here assembled also avoid conceiving Cicero’s works as either the Author’s profession of faith in a philosophical doctrine, or a tendentious presentation of the theses of philosophical schools. Instead, the contributors adopt another interpretative key, so that, when analyzing a philosophical dialogue of Cicero, instead of seeking references to its historical moment, focus on its controversial aspects (due to the dispute between the schools of philosophy), rhetorical aspects (the amplifying devices through which the Author compares the strength of one thesis with the weakness of another), fictional aspects (including the description of the scene and the picture of the characters). Thus, it can be said that the book seeks a more appropriate approach to Cicero’s works, not taking them as mere source of historical knowledge, but considering their historicity, that is, the devices for discursive production of their own time.

In Ciceronis Topica and De topicis differentiis are Boethius's two treatises on Topics (loci). Together these two works present Boethius's theory of the art of discovering arguments, a theory that was highly influential in the history of medieval logic. Eleonore Stump here presents the first English language translation of In Ciceronis Topica, Boethius's extended commentary on Cicero's Topica. To supplement her translation, Professor Stump has provided an introduction that supplies essential information about In Ciceronis Topica, Boethius's life, and the tradition of dialectic; her detailed notes explore the many philosophical problems in Boethius's text. A significant contribution to the history of Western intellectual life in its own right, Boethius's ''In Ciceronis Topica" makes an excellent companion to Professor Stump's earlier work, Boethius's "De topicis differentiis" (also available from Cornell).
