Abstract

Breast cancer has become the most diagnosed cancer globally, surpassing lung and prostate cancers. In 2020, 2.3 million females were diagnosed with breast cancer worldwide. The incidence and related mortality from breast cancer continue to grow despite remarkable advances in our understanding of the biology of breast cancer and the availability of better therapeutic options. Therapies currently used to treat metastatic breast cancer extend the survival and quality of life of patients, but they are not curative. Therefore, a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in metastatic dissemination is of pivotal importance. This book provides a unique blend of carefully presented and structured information covering a broad array of relevant breast cancer-related issues. The first eight chapters cover breast cancer epidemiology, etiology, subtypes, current and emerging surgical innovations to treat and image breast cancer, a description of noninvasive lymphedema assessment methods to detect and track this important treatment complication, and the potential role of platelets and galectins in breast cancer metastasis. The last five chapters are devoted to the description of forward-looking albeit potential breast cancer treatment possibilities. In this regard, different chapters of the book describe novel research on the potential of ubiquitin-specific protease 18 (USP-18), ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (RPS6K1), the lysosomal system, nanoparticles, and proteolysis target chimeras as therapeutic agents for breast cancer. The range of clinical and translational research of breast cancer presented in this book will be of interest to healthcare professionals, clinicians, and basic scientists.

Abstract

This book portrays the personal experience of breast cancer through the stories of three women and their partners. The combination of emotional and factual information on the disease, treatment options, and health promotion strategies makes this important reading for health professionals and their patients. It is derived from a major NYU nursing study of 121 couples. Each chapter is followed by study questions and a knowledge review, which can be used in patient education. An overview of the NYU study is given as well as a list of relevant Internet sites. A companion video series is also avail

Abstract

A cancer prognosis has the tendency to knock patients and their family off their feet. Nothing can prepare people for the big "C" and it often feels like they are losing control over their own life, where nothing will be the same again. This book takes readers through the journey of Prema (diagnosed with breast cancer) and Prem (her caregiver) and covers the whole gamut of processes in cancer treatment and care in a simple language: diagnosis, medical treatment options, physical and psychosocial side effects, complementary therapies, and the importance of patient-centric care to improve the quality of life of breast cancer survivors. We hope future breast cancer patients and their families will benefit from our book and prepare themselves to face the challenges of dealing with breast cancer.

Abstract

Vividly showcasing diverse voices and experiences, this book illuminates an all-too-common experience by exploring how women respond to a diagnosis of breast cancer. Drawing from interviews in which women describe their journeys from diagnosis through treatment and recovery, Julia A. Ericksen explores topics ranging from women's trust in their doctors to their feelings about appearance and sexuality. She includes the experiences of women who do not put their faith in traditional medicine as well as those who do, and she takes a look at the long-term consequences of this disease. What emerges from her powerful and often moving account is a compelling picture of how cultural messages about breast cancer shape women's ideas about their illness, how breast cancer affects their relationships with friends and family, why some of them become activists, and more. Ericksen, herself a breast cancer survivor, has written an accessible book that reveals much about the ways in which we narrate our illnesses and about how these narratives shape the paths we travel once diagnosed.

Abstract

"Mammography is a routine health screening performed 40 million times each year in the United States, yet it remains one of the most deeply contested topics in medicine, with national health care organizations supporting conflicting guidelines. In Mammography Wars, sociologist Asia Friedman examines cultural and medical disagreements over mammography. At issue is whether to screen women under age 50, which is rooted in deeper questions about early detection and the assumed linear and progressive development of breast cancer. Based on interviews with doctors and scientists, interviews with women age 40-50, and newspaper coverage of mammography, Friedman uses the sociology of attention to map the cognitive structure of the "mammography wars," offering insights into the entrenched nature of debates over mammography that often get missed when applying a medical lens. Friedman's analysis also suggests the sociology of attention's unique potential for analyzing cultural conflicts beyond mammography, and even beyond medicine"--

Abstract

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed type of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in women after lung cancer. It is estimated that breast cancer affects more than 1,000,000 women worldwide each year, and about 450,000 die from the disease. During the last decades, breast cancer has received considerable attention, yet it is a very old disease that was described years and years ago. This book provides a summary of breast cancer history. It covers the ages from the ancient times to the early 2000's, but mainly focuses on the 20th century and its numerous discoveries and inventions in the field of breast cancer detection, analysis and treatment.

Abstract

Cancer care delivery refers to the multiple layers of the health care system that interact to affect outcomes for patients with cancer and the quality of that care. The factors included in the care delivery system that potentially alter outcomes include social dynamics, financing systems, organizational structures and processes, health technologies, provider and individual behaviors. Because women’s health care has its own unique challenges, the intersection between cancer care delivery and women’s health is to be examined in this Frontiers in Oncology issue. The unique opportunities and challenges of improving the health care system for women with breast and gynecologic cancers are to be explored in depth. We will visit many topics of cancer care delivery with the unique perspective geared towards the care of women’s malignancies.
