Abstract

Fractional-order Systems and Controls details the use of fractional calculus (calculus of non-integer order) in the description and modeling of systems, and in a range of control design and practical applications. It is largely self-contained, covering the fundamentals of fractional calculus together with some analytical and numerical techniques and providing MATLAB® codes for the simulation of fractional-order control (FOC) systems (available by download from www.springer.com/ISBN). The use of fractional calculus can improve and generalize well-established control methods and strategies. Many different FOC schemes are presented for control and dynamic systems problems. These extend to the challenging control engineering design problems of robust and nonlinear control. Practical material relating to a wide variety of applications including, among others, mechatronics, civil engineering, irrigation and water management, and biological systems is also provided. All the control schemes and applications are presented in the monograph with either system simulation results or real experimental results, or both. Fractional-order Systems and Controls introduces its readers – academic and industrial control researchers interested in mechatronics, nonlinear and robust control, and applications fields from civil engineering to biological systems – to the essentials of FOC and imbues them with a basic understanding of FOC concepts and methods. With this knowledge readers can extend their use of FOC in other industrial system applications, thereby expanding their range of disciplines by exploiting this versatile new set of control techniques.

Abstract

Optimal Control brings together many of the important advances in 'nonsmooth' optimal control over the last several decades concerning necessary conditions, minimizer regularity, and global optimality conditions associated with the Hamilton–Jacobi equation. The book is largely self-contained and incorporates numerous simplifications and unifying features for the subject’s key concepts and foundations. Features and Topics: * a comprehensive overview is provided for specialists and nonspecialists * authoritative, coherent, and accessible coverage of the role of nonsmooth analysis in investigating minimizing curves for optimal control * chapter coverage of dynamic programming and the regularity of minimizers * explains the necessary conditions for nonconvex problems This book is an excellent presentation of the foundations and applications of nonsmooth optimal control for postgraduates, researchers, and professionals in systems, control, optimization, and applied mathematics. ----- Each chapter contains a well-written introduction and notes. They include the author's deep insights on the subject matter and provide historical comments and guidance to related literature. This book may well become an important milestone in the literature of optimal control.—Mathematical Reviews This remarkable book presents Optimal Control seen as a natural development of Calculus of Variations so as to deal with the control of engineering devices. ... Thanks to a great effort to be self-contained, it renders accessibly the subject to a wide audience. Therefore, it is recommended to all researchers and professionals interested in Optimal Control and its engineering and economic applications. It can serve as an excellent textbook for graduate courses in Optimal Control (with special emphasis on Nonsmooth Analysis). —Automatica The book may be an essential resource for potential readers, experts in control and optimization, as well as postgraduates and applied mathematicians, and it will be valued for its accessibility and clear exposition.—Applications of Mathematics.

Abstract

"Advanced Topics in Control Systems Theory" contains selected contributions written by lecturers at the third (annual) Formation d’Automatique de Paris (FAP) (Graduate Control School in Paris). Following on from the lecture notes from the second FAP (Volume 311 in the same series) it is addressed to graduate students and researchers in control theory with topics touching on a variety of areas of interest to the control community such as nonlinear optimal control, observer design, stability analysis and structural properties of linear systems. The reader is provided with a well-integrated synthesis of the latest thinking in these subjects without the need for an exhaustive literature review. The internationally known contributors to this volume represent many of the most reputable control centers in Europe.

Abstract

This book concerns the numerical simulation of dynamical systems whose trajectories may not be differentiable everywhere. They are named nonsmooth dynamical systems. They make an important class of systems, firstly because of the many applications in which nonsmooth models are useful, secondly because they give rise to new problems in various fields of science. Usually nonsmooth dynamical systems are represented as differential inclusions, complementarity systems, evolution variational inequalities, each of these classes being itself split into several subclasses. With detailed examples of multibody systems with contact, impact and friction and electrical circuits with piecewise linear and ideal components, the book is is mainly intended for researchers in Mechanics and Electrical Engineering, but it will be attractive to researchers from other scientific communities like Systems and Control, Robotics, Physics of Granular Media, Civil Engineering, Virtual Reality, Haptic Systems, Computer Graphics, etc.

Abstract

The presence of non-linearities, such as stiction and deadband, places limits on the performance of control valves. Indeed, in the process industries, stiction is the most common valve problem, and over the last decade numerous different techniques for overcoming it have been proposed. Detection and Diagnosis of Stiction in Control Loops represents a comprehensive presentation of these methods, including their principles, assumptions, strengths and drawbacks. Guidelines and working procedures are provided for the implementation of each method and MATLAB®-based software can be downloaded from www.ualberta.ca/~bhuang/stiction-book enabling readers to apply the methods to their own data. Methods for the limitation of stiction effects are proposed within the general context of: • oscillation detection in control loops; • stiction detection and diagnosis; and • stiction quantification and diagnosis of multiple faults. The state-of-the-art algorithms presented in this book are demonstrated and compared in industrial case studies of diverse origin – chemicals, building, mining, pulp and paper, mineral and metal processing. Industry-based engineers will find the book to be valuable guidance in increasing the performance of their control loops while academic researchers and graduate students interested in control performance and fault detection will discover a wealth of static-friction-related research and useful algorithms.

Abstract

While conceptually elegant, the generic formulations of nonlinear model predictive control are not ready to use for the stabilization of fast systems. Dr. Alamir presents a successful approach to this problem based on a co-operation between structural considerations and on-line optimization. The balance between structural and optimization aspects of the method is dependent on the system being considered so the many examples aim to transmit a mode of thought rather than a ready-to-use recipe; they include: - double inverted pendulum; - non-holonomic systems in chained form; - snake board; - missile in intercept mission; - polymerization reactor; - walking robot; - under-actuated satellite in failure mode. In addition, the basic stability results under receding horizon control schemes are revisited using a sampled-time, low-dimensional control parameterization that is mandatory for fast computation and some novel formulations are proposed which offer promising directions for future research.
