First published in 1942, this dictionary was designed to help civilians and members of H.M. forces to make their way amid the jungle of wartime abbreviations. The preface notes that newspaper readers, sailors, soldiers and airmen had to thrust themselves, like explorers, into these abbreviations in search of truth, or the execution of their martial duty and hence, a dictionary was necessary. This book will be of interest to scholars of history and language, as well as the more general, interested reader.

Über Symbole zu sprechen bedeutet, die Struktur hinter der Schöpfung zu erfassen. Zeitlos haben sie aus der tiefsten menschlichen Vergangenheit bis in die Gegenwart überdauert. In the beginning was the word – and the foreword. Words are combined to sentences and eventually language. Words are listed in a dictionary and their meaning in building language are explained in a lexicon. In the life sciences – e. g. drug development sciences and pharmaceutical medicine – the analogies are evidenced by the - nomic library and patho-physiological function as the lexicon. In this transition from code to function integrated lexica pay a pivotal role for a faster understanding. The present updated version of this books combines dictionary and lexicon and provides the translational understanding of the complex drug development process.
