Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) and his younger protege Egon Schiele (1890-1918) are considered two of the greatest figures of Austrian Modernism. Whether competing with or inspiring one another, together they reconfigured the way the human body was translated into art. Although both artists are primarily remembered as painters, between them they left 7,000 drawings, many of the greatest of which are now in the collection of the Albertina Museum, Vienna.0In 2018 an exhibition opens in London of both artists' drawings from the Albertina. This stunning publication records these precious works, which are very rarely displayed and almost never travel, in all their erotic, intriguing and sometimes disturbing beauty. Leading experts on the period provide authoritative texts that illuminate the important relationship between the two artists. They analyse the role of drawing in their practice and chart the response of early twentieth-century Vienna to their electrifying work, which still has the power to shock and enthral to this day. Exhibition: Royal Academy of Arts, London, UK (04.11.2018 - 02.02.2019).

In Die Rifāīya Boris Liebrenz explores the book culture of Ottoman Syria (16th to 19th century), using the only surviving Damascene private library of the time as a vantage point. He asks about the production and transmission of knowledge as well as the social background of the reading audience in a manuscript age. Scholarship on Arabic libraries has often focussed on the medieval period and relied nearly exclusively on literary accounts. This is the first book-length study that focuses on a single region in the Ottoman period and systematically uses the vast number of surviving manuscripts as a documentary source by means of the notes left by their readers and possessors. Thus, it sheds light on the material, juridical, and social basis of book-ownership and reading-- Provided by Publisher.

Sweden may be seen as a Protestant nation of great engineers and entrepreneurs, but the nation’s spiritual life has long been influenced by a less official current, visible in its art and literature. Mysticism and esoteric speculation runs through the writings of some of Sweden’s most important figures, from the 18th-century scientist, theologian and philosopher Emanuel Swedenborg to the turn of the 20th century with August Strindberg, known primarily as a novelist and playwright. He was also involved in alchemical experiments, occult photography and proto-expressionist paintings that verge on abstraction. In the same period we find art by visionaries such as Carl Fredrik Hill, Ernst Josephson and Hilma af Klint. These visions continue to inspire contemporary artists such as Cecilia Edefalk, Carsten Höller, Christine Ödlund, Daniel Youssef and Lars Olof Loeld.

One of Maximilian's most important legacies is the work created in his honour by some of the greatest artists of his time, most notably Albrecht Dürer. Today many of these works reside in the Albertina Museum in Vienna, and they are featured in this elegant volume. In addition to works by Dürer, the book includes reproductions of the extraordinary Triumphal Procession of Albrecht Altdorfer and his workshop, and the monumental woodcut Triumphal Arch. This book explores the artistic culture of Maximilian's era, with numerous examples from the Albertina's own collection as well as painted portraits, exquisite illuminated manuscripts, precious sculptures and splendid tapestries from some of the world's leading museums. Brought together in this elegant volume, these works offer valuable insight into Maximilian's public relations "machinery." Exhibition: Albertina, Vienna, Austria (14.9.2012-6.1.2013).
